Default S2000 vs.Hot Hatch Advice Needed

Hey guys and gals, longtime lurker here, and I need some advice.

I’m finally in a financial and phase-of-life position to obtain a for fun sporty car. Yay!

I’ve cross shopped just about everything that I can think of that fits this definition (BRZ/FR-S, Z3, GTI, 370Z, NB/NC Miatas, Volvo C30, and the list goes on…), and the two clear front runners are the S2000 and the Fiesta ST.

As soon as I got into an S (I’ve only driven AP2s) everything just “fit” and felt right. I really enjoyed the performance and love the looks of the car. The Fiesta was also a total blast, and just blew me away with how it felt on the road.

Whatever I end up purchasing will become a stablemate with the higher mileage AWD wagon that has been my daily for a few years. The wagon will be put on October-March winter duty here in snowy central Idaho, and the S will be the fair-weather daily driver.

Have any of you in the community made the decision between a hot hatch and a proper roadster in your past? And if so, why did you choose what you did? (I imagine that you all chose the roadster!)

Or should I just forget about the whole thing and bank the extra dough?

I really, really like both the S2000 and the FiST, and can easily see myself in either of them. The hatchback practicality of the Fiesta is somewhat moot because of the wagon, but it was so fun to drive that I don’t really care.

I know that comparing these two cars is something of an apples and oranges affair, but figured that it couldn’t hurt to ask people who are certainly wiser and more experienced than myself.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice to a younger member,

Cheers!

RWD > FWD

The fiesta im sure is fun, but the S2000 is a proper sports car.

While the FiST is a fantastic car and I love boost, no one will make a car like the S2000 ever again. It's a modern classic and just going up in value. It's supposed to be a fun car, so don't compromise. Go for the handling balance of the 2-seater, RWD sports car. There will be more hot hatches in the future, but I doubt we'll see another 2800lbs, 240hp, RWD sports car like the S2000 again. The BRZ/FRS tried, but is way down on power.

That has sort of been my train of thought throughout this process as well. Before I drove them I thought all the talking heads were just going harsh on the Toyobaru twins, but when I got behind the wheel they really felt like they needed moah powah. I really wanted to like them.

Thanks for the input!

I have a very nice clean Mazda Miata , I would make you a good deal on..............: : ) , but honestly I would go with the S2000 over the Ford.

I actually had to decide between the FiST and the S2000. There are pros and cons between the two, as you'd imagine. But you already have a wagon as a DD. It would only make sense to go for the S as the fun weekend car. Good luck!

I'm having trouble arguing with myself against that logic. And that's in addition to the facts that the FiST is still in production, and that I may be able to snap one up a while later if I'm still pining for it.

But it's good to know that there's someone out there who had to choose between the two and is happy with their decision (I assume).

Thanks for your thoughts!

Get an S2000, save up your money for a few years and then go buy a Focus RS after the mania subsides...

The S2k is the car that will make you the better driver.

My choice was also apples oranges, between an Audi S4 and the S2k. One of the best decisions I've ever made...
