Well, regardless of where you are, you're going to run into vandals, careless idiots, and theives. I had an Integra GS-R in college, and it made it through most of my senior year without incident. Unfortunately, two local kids crashed their own Integra, and decided it would be easier to steal new parts, rather than buy them. Anyway, I came out of the library and found my car up on blocks. I called the police, called AAA, and cursed up a storm. The funny thing is, just as the police pulled into the lot, the 2 idiot theives came back to steal more parts, saw the police, and tried to peel out of the lot. Needless to say, the police caught them about a mile up the road with a pickup full of my stuff. A-holes.

This all happened in Williamsburg, VA. . . not exactly a sprawling metropolis. So, I guess its a hit or miss situation, regardless of whether you're in a major city, like NYC, or in Durham, NC (that same Integra was been broken into once in over 3 years here in Philly, versus once in less than 12 mos. in Williamsburg). If you take the S, drive it and enjoy it. My guess is that 2 weeks into school you'll be more concerned with drinking, studying, partying, and late night binge eating. . . damn, I want to go back to undergrad again.

This is going to sound like a real snobby reply, but it's not meant to be....

IN GENERAL, I think that at Duke, a private school, you will be better off than some of these horror stories suggest. Most of the annecdotes came from public schools, which because of the cheaper tuition, attract both more people overall, and a more diverse economic group. I go to Villanova, another expensive private school that is slightly easier than Duke to get into, and when I get my S2000, the odds are against the kid with the new Grand Cherokee or 3-series keying my car out of a fit of jealous rage. I just glanced at Duke stats, and it costs ~$40k/yr to go there, and has a middle 50% SAT range starting at 1350. Again, A GENERALIZATION, but kids this smart and this wealthy don't tend to go around keying cars for fun. This is not to get into a private vs. public school debate, but let's face it, you will probably have more issues at Dumbazz Community College than you will at Harvard.

That's regarding malicious vandalism, anyways. On the subject of carelessness, the parking spaces at Nova are tiny, and my Civic has definately gained some door dings since it got here. However, you can get door dings everywhere, and once you accumulate a few, if it really bothers you you can get them removed for a few hundred $$$. If you really want the car to look brand new, the best thing to do is not drive it at all, but where's the fun in that? Just remember, no matter how great we think the S2000 is, it's not a Ferrari Enzo or 250GTO or anything. It costs less than a year at either of our schools, so don't let the stress of worrying about it take the fun out of driving it.

PS...congrats on getting into Duke.

You have to drive the car so there's nothing you can do about it short of not going to school or trading it or picking up more insurance. Try to park where it's well lit and don't leave anything tempting in it. The car is going to get dinged and bumped--it's just part of college life.

I daresay there are folks here who would gladly risk the car for a chance to go to Duke, so just enjoy college. It's a fantastic time. Enjoy!

My girlfriend goes to UNT (university of north texas) a very large school here in texas. i stay at her apt all the time and my S2000 has been just fine. I'd say go for it unless it is in a not so good part of town. You should be fine. As long as you can park in a safe area.
