Default S2K Daily Commute?

Hey everyone, I am looking to buy a 2002 S2K and it will be my everyday car. Is that a dumb idea? I am 6'4" by the way. If it is a bad decision, why and what sporty car should I get?

Where in the country are you?
Do you drive in bad weather (esp snow/ice?)
Are you going to buy snow tires?
How far do you drive every day?
Do you have have to drive others around much?
What do you currently drive?
etc.

We need more info before we can adequately advise you; but really, all we can do is give advice, you have to decide if the joy of driving the S2000 outweighs the obvious drawbacks like NVH and poor-weather traction.

Personally, I have a '98 nissan altima as my everyday car. It runs smooth and quiet, plenty of torque around town and great winter weather traction. I use the s2k as my weekend car--not that I dont drive it during the week sometimes, but not everyday. Occassionally I take the s2k on a long trip (just took a trip from alex. VA to Ocean City and the gas mileage on the s2k was great!), but I tend to stick to around to driving because alot of high speed driving eats up the rear tires in about 10,000 miles.

I say get the s2k but keep another car (if you already have one, or can afford to find a cheap but reliable used car, like say 1990-something corolla). My 2 cents.

Answers:
I live in Columbus, Ohio
Winters around here are mild, rare to see much snow
I will be buying snow tires
Daily drive is around 5 miles
Never have to drive anyone but myself and my girlfriend

I have a S2000 as one of 4 cars. At first I didn't drive the S2000 much in winter until this year I got snow tires and had no problem driving it 95% of the winter, still didn't drive it when we got 6+ inches of snow.

If you can live with the tight interior and mildly poor rain/snow ability it's OK as an only car.

ps I have a hardtop so it's nicer in the winter months.

FWIW I really love the e36 M3 for under $20K

I'd check with the members in the Ohio forum to see what they recommend for that area, go here:

I commute in mine on nice days 7 months a year. I have driven mine in the rain and had no trouble, but prefer not to. Basically, If I can not have the top down I don't drive it. I have secure parking at work and many times I might put the top down and it does not go up for a month or two.

It seems to do just fine, although errands are limited by the size of the car. In lots of stop and go and stepping on it I can get as low as 22mpg. I regularly get 26 mpg but I have a 11 mile commute of which about 10 miles is uninterupted 65-70 mph. My last tank was 27.5 mpg and I think it got better milage because it was 100 degrees so I drove half of the tank with the top up and AC on. There is much more drag with the top down.

My milage might be better than most because I use my cruise all the time, and while I VTEC whenever I can just for fun, many of my commutes are unimpeded. I am 5'6" though so the car fits me just fine and I have no problem with a stiffer ride. I like it that way.

If you are going to drive it in the winter with the top up, it tends to bottle up the noise and it will be louder than many cars, but I have another car for winter. I personally would not drive it in snow, but have never tried snow tires.
