hirev,

Thanks very much for the post, very informative and unbiased. Good to hear an opinion from someone with so much insurance experience.

RyanS2000:

If misrepresentation of address is such a cause of rising insurance rates, why don't insurance companies actively pursue people who do this? It seems like there are quite a few people in the world (and this board) who have done this at one point or another. (This is an honest question, not an "I'm right, you're wrong" statement.)

We do very actively pursue it. We have a seperate Rate Accuracy department that handles fishy situations. It's just impossible to catch all of it. Many people manage to provide fraudulant proof of address.

Thank you for contributing to this thread by calling me an asshole for sharing my opinion on mis-leading an insurance company.

I apologized to the thread starter for my "unfair comment". Now maybe you can grow up and do the same to me.

Craig
I was mostly saying that nay-sayers are a-holes. I stick by that statement. As to whether or not you are a nay-sayer is still in question. Judging by your last post, i think you were probably trying to put in some valid $.02

so I appologize if you took offense, but for all you know, I'm just some 16 year old fat kid with acne. You shouldnt get offended so easily.

If I'm misinterpreting you here, I apologize.

If, by nay-sayers, you mean those of us who are maintaining that it's wrong to deliberately give false information to the insurance agent in order to profit from lower premiums, I'd say, "get over it!"

I've got no love of insurance companies. I think they're "way" too powerful and I resent being forced to do business with them. On the other hand, I've got no use for those who deliberately try to scam insurance companies to make a profit. The only people they're really hurting are those who are trying to live their lives honestly!!

For what it's worth, I'm not deliberately pointing any fingers at anyone in this conversation but if this strikes a "little" too close to home for some of you, then maybe you need to take a good long look in the mirror.

If trying to be honest in your lifes dealings, whether it's with a friend, business aquaintance, or an insurance company makes one an a-hole, then I'll proudly wear the name.

Steve R.

I think he was referring to people who are just trying to shoot you down for whatever reason possible. Not people who actually gave thought to the matter and shared an honest opinion (like yourself.)

well, you could always self-insure, but who's crazy enough to do that?

Well, when I win the megaball lottery, I'll give it strong consideration. In the mean time, I, like the vast majority of us, will just have to muddle through with things the way they are.

Haha, I love how people think the insurance companies are rolling in dough and screwing people. Most insurance companies actually lose money on claims and lose big time. For a while most companies were lucky to only lose 5% which totals hundreds of millions for some companies. Insurance companies make their money by investing the premiums you pay. Much like a bank invests your deposits, they make 10% on investment return and give you back 1% in savings interest...that's a little oversimplified but same principal. Insurance companies lose money on claims and you shouldn't try to screw them out of more since it will only cause a rise in other peoples insurance.

Well at least I'm not the only one who understands how insurance companies operate.

I had a celica that was registered in NorCal, insured in NorCal and I am living in North Carolina .. I got into a pretty bad accident in my car and the insurance was no problem, they never asked why I was in NC, given its not much of their problem why their only concern is whos fault was it. As long as your vehicle is insured somewhat close you won't have a problem. Hell I had a motorcycle insured in cali and it was registered in NC and I got hit while I was parked and the insurance still covered me. Im no expert but anything is possible.

Besides, my current agent told me to do insure it in a different zip code also.

No offense, and maybe I'm just ignorant, but I'm not sure I'm buying this "poor ol insurance company, loosing their collective arses just to take care of ours" line!

I'm sure there are times when the profit/loss statement goes into the red zone but overall, in the long run, those guys are making money hand over fist. I know agents who have made "well" into 6 figures per year. If they were loosing money as badly as you imply, they've have been out of business a long time ago. I'm sure there are smaller companies that have gone under but you can point those out in just about any business line.

JMO!
