The F355 looked awesome with pop-up headlights. So did the 1968 Corevette. I even liked the last generation RX-7 and the MR2 turbo.
But, hey, if we're going back in time for styling 'improvements', why stop at the '70's and '80's? Tailfins would be easy to fabricate from fiberglass (they could even be carbon fiber, yo). Imagine...

I had an '89 240 sx coupe ( not the fast back, those things were gay)
It had the pop up lights and they looked nice at the time. Now they just look dated. The funny thing about them was they had a button to raise them without turning them on so you could change the bulbs out. If you pushed that button a bunch of times really fast, they would get out of sinc and one would go up while the other was going down. Looked really stupid. Kinda like it was winking at you.

I ain't got nothing against pop-ups. I had an MR2 and they were indeed cool. Cool on that particular model car. Designed by teams with lots of money. Each mechanical part, specification, process and curve designed with a unified purpose.
'Modding' popups, or a comical wing, or CF, or plastic body kits, or go cart roll bars on an S however, is like taking a dump on a fine steak...or in the best case soaking a perfectly cooked filet in A1 sauce. Yes it is still edible, but what is the point?? You have ruined it. Broken the balance. Taken a car with millions in R&D and turned it into a 20 dolla ho.
If you wanna put all that crap on it, buy a cheaper cut of meat. It's still a 20 dolla ho when you glue all the autoshack crap on it, but at least you paid the 20 dolla rate to get your groove on.
It reminds me of folks that insist on demonstrating their 'individuality' by covering their own body with scars, tats, ball bearings under skin, and you name it body mutilations. The each try to outdo the other with their in-duh-viduality and fail to notice they are all part of the same misled group doing the exact same thing. Sheep taking turns following each other around the farm, thinking the entire time about how independent they surely must be.
