Although I have no personal experience, several respected posters have said that the difference winter tires make on the S2K is like night and day. Also, since Blizzaks or equal winter tires are cheaper than S02's (and couldn't possibly wear any faster), you'll actually save money on tires by using them. (Not to mention the money you'll save on body work.)

Thanks Tox--

A friend of mine with an S4 told me about the Blizzaks; that's good information to have. I'm hoping I can spare the extra tire change for this season since it will hopefully end soon, (then again, it is Chicago we're talking about). Good point too about the body work savings.

This car could get stuck on a single ice molecule...

After two weeks with Blizzak MZ-01s, I'm more and more convinced they make the S2000 the best rear wheel drive car you could have in the winter. Chicago and Sheridan, WY have similar weather.

Remember, the biggest danger you'll have winter driving is the other guy. No snows will stop you from being plowed into.

Here is my thread from just after I got my Blizzaks.

Blizzak MZ-01s are the one.

Barry WY - I could not agree with you more. I live in New Hampshire and we get our fair share of the white stuff and ice. I am running MZ-01s on my Stook and have all the confidence in the world that I will get there and back. That is of course the idiots in the SUVs would stop doing "silly human tricks" in their vehicles. Blizzak MZ-01s are a very good tire, I really did my homework before I bought them, they have been worth every penny.

Of course you have to drive accordingly. You will feel that the car handles a little looser on tight corners with them on, but overall you get a very good performance on the dry pavement as well as wet. Blizzaks are one of the top sellers in Germany and you know how serious they are about driving.

We have had an awful winter in Connecticut. Snow on ground in the Northern part since Thanksgiving. I have only been able to get the car out a few times due to ice on my driveway or bad road conditions. Just got back from a ski trip to Whistler in B.C. and hit 50 degree wheather on our return, so last night I took the car to a meeting in Fairfield about 30 miles each way, it was great to drive it again. Looking forward to the end of this winter so it can be driven all the time. Are there any meetings planned in Ct. for the spring. Somehow I will have to wash it since it has some road dirt on it.

Long Winter

My stook is parked in a garge in Green Bay. Just sitting there.
I am replacing the brakes today or tomorrow. I am hoping it stays sunny and somewhat warm this weekend. I have a set of tires in Racine to put on. S02s.

I really feel the need. I too, have not been on the board to much lately, for the same reason of seeing how everyone else is enjoying their cars. While mine is just waiting.

Soon, better weather is coming. Just waiting a little more for the pot holes and salt to go away.

Then look out.

Hey Laster,

how did you make out with your new speakers? (I forgot which ones you purchased)

It looks like everyone from NE knows this winter has been a little difficult and is anxious to put the top down on their stook. We should have some bigger rallies this year.

Tell Ronnie I said hi.

If you are going to drive in the winter, get snow tires. I crashed my stook a few weeks ago and smashed up the front end. Now I'm spending 3 weeks in a rental car waiting for my stook to get fixed. The S02's don't have any grip when it's cold. Get snow tires or park your car.

This is my first winter with the S2000 in NY. The original tires are dangerous when it gets cold out. They break loose without warning. When there's snow, don't even think of moving with them.

After reading this board, I bought Blizzaks MZ-01's (the same size all around) from TireRack.com. I have to say that they are amazing in the snow. A few weeks ago, we had a big snow storm and when work was out, I had a 10 mile drive on roads that handn't been plowed for a while and had 2-3" on them. The S2000 did fine and I was quite impressed with how well the car tracked, even when hitting the ridges of snow that had built up.

When I got to my neighborhood, there was 6" of snow on the road and it handn't been plowed. I followed somone else's tracks, but was plowing snow with the front of the car. I had to try 8 or 9 times to get up one big hill, but I made it. When I got into the back of the neighborhood, there were no pre-made tracks and the plowed snow was going over the car in sheets so I couldn't see where I was going.

This is as bad as it usually gets around here. After this, I was convinced that I could go ahead and sell my Subaru Legacy, which the S2000 is replacing (which I did).
