Default Safety -- Crash Test Ratings

Considering the S2k...

Recently bought the S2k book by Daniel F. Carney.

On page 42, Daniel says "Despite having its own standards, Honda tested the S2000 according to outside requirements for accurate comparison to other cars." "These tests the NHTSA new New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and Side Impact NCAP, as well as the tough frontal crash test used by the Insurance Institute for HIghway Safety (IIHS)".

Otobe is quoted to have said, "For full frontal collisions, Honda's in-house NCAP five-star rank was achieved." "Concerning offset frontal collisions, Honda's in-house IIHS 'good' level was reached." Those are the maximum scores for each of those tests.

. . ."For Honda's in-house side collision tes, SINCAP four-star level was recognized."

--------------------------

Does anyone have the actual IIHS or NHTSA ratings on this car? I'm concerned about the "maximum" quote. There are ratings for:

Overall
Structure/Safety cage
Head/Neck
Chest
Legs/foot, left
Legs/foot, right
Restraints/dummy kinematics

see: http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_ratings/c.../html/00006.htm

as an example.

Or,

Also, does anyone know the NHTSA ratings in full??

Here is what they have on their website: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testing/ncap.../cars/1692.html

Thx, Mark

Also, given that crash test ratings are relative to a category, do we know where the S2k ratings fall in the grand scheme of things? Does anyone have a mapping of the relative ratings in each category???

Isn't anyone concerned about safety?

-Mark

BB API:

Define good?

I stated all the facts I know of. Do you have additional information?

Good compared to other convertibles? (extremely low baseline)
Good compared to a BMW 5-series? (yeah right)
Good when hit with an SUV?

There is so little room between me, the center console, and the door that I also have a hard time beliving that, in the event of a side impact crash, I would live.

Another note:

Without side protection/side airbag, there are serious issues with side collisions.

I've seen photos of the S2000 crash tests and was quite impressed with how well the passenger compartment held up in the frontal and frontal offset tests. One of the Japanese S2000 feature mags had the photos (not Best Motoring or HyperRev).

1Y2KS2k:

I understand IIHS says that they did not perform the tests. However, Daniel Carney quotes crash test values in his book from the IIHS.

cdelena:

The only prudent thing to do is to worry about it.

Suburban's and Excursion's likely underperform our Mercedes ML320, as well as the BMW X5, etc...The X5 is excellent, due to the head airbags, for instance. Our ML320 has many safety considerations that the Suburban does not have. I agree that weight is a nice thing to have in general though...
