Salesperson Bait and Switch (Long)
I agree with station, the two probably split the commission. Most stores usually have a specified period that a "phone pop" inquiry will still qualify for a half deal. In our store, after a week or so, the sales consultant must show they were doing follow up to still qualify for the the half.
Radster,
Unfortunatley this is how the business works. Most stores want all customers to be attended to, regardless whos "client" or prospective client they are. I have to tell my friends to only work with me, it sounds selfish, but it is a "win win" also. I feel I am able to best serve my clients and having a sales consultant involved can sometimes complicate things.
Our store has a policy that the "original" salesman will get credit and the "closer" will get the other half. If the original and the closer is the same person he gets both halves. If someone gets in the middle he is usually out. It is up to the "closer" to decide who gets the other half.

Moonpie-
Although policy varies from store to store, I generally believe the salesperson you originally talked to should be given half of the commission. She should not be penalized for trying to maintain whatever level of profit that store wishes to make on the car. If she had not told you about the car, you probably would not have gone to the store. Her biggest mistake was negotiating price over the phone, and not in person. That cost her half of a deal.
Radster-
Car salespeople are generally compensated by commission only, and therefore our time is valuable. Whatever time the salesperson spent with you took him off the sales floor and could potentially cost him money. (although it doesn't sound like he did much) Regardless, Duane should not be discussing dealership policy and commissions with you. That is between employees only and can only cause problems, as is evident from your dissatisfaction with the situation.

gearhead28: what you say makes good sense. Come to think of it, she did talk to me for about 10 mins on the phone and call me back with details; that's not really my beef. I just wish that I had been informed of the apparent switch, as I still don't know who my salesperson is

moonpie; My question is, did you pay the 2K over MSRP as the result of dealing with the second person? If so why? If not, did the second salesperson offer up a better deal? It would be very interesting to know if the deal that we get as buyer's depend on the person we deal with, and maybe not so much the dealership. I have never found the latter to be true, but I never really tried dealing with two sales people from the same place at once.
