salvaged s2000 advice
Just found an ad for a s2k in craigs: http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/1751516921.html. It's 2001 salvage title with 59k on the odom, has check engine, abs, and service lights on and has scratches on the front bumper. He wants $6700 for it, which is reasonable (i think) considering the problems. Im gonna go check it out and bring my obdi reader to see the problems. I've heard that around 60k you need to replace the timing belt, etc. anyways. My question is, how much estimated repair costs do you guys think I can consider reasonable until i need to draw the line and say its just not worth the purchase? Im thinking if repairs cost me no more than $1000 in parts (ill fix myself i have a garage) than i could go ahead and make the purchase.
s2000's do not have a timing belt, we have a timing chain. I say if you ever think you will sell it, dont buy it. The title issue will kill the value, especially when the miles get racked up higher.
My personal opinion, save up and get a decent mileage, clean title AP1. You can get decent ones around the 9-10k mark. I honestly wouldnt buy that car. Just seems like it would be to much trouble than its worth uness you dont plan on selling, or your turning it into a track car.

. My friend bought a salvaged 05 GTO that had the engine stolen out of it and he had to replace it with a 06 GTO engine. He has encountered numerous problems with the alternator and other components. It just doesnt run right, he has all the paper work and everything with a false VIN #. He payed 14k for it.
Ahhh a timing chain, i see. My bad I'm a noob with this vehicle.
I definitely need to find out if it was wrecked or stolen though. Thanks! I'm thinking i should probably pass on it if its a wrecked vehicle. I'll remember to check the VIN of course.

Yes sir, get the VIN and do a carfax on it. Its well worth seeing the cars history before spending some bucks on it. That will also show you if it has been in an accident or anything making it a salvage vehicle. If it all seems okay. Be sure to test drive it through all the gears, listen to the engine idle for a bit to make sure there isnt any knocking or anything. Our cars have a noisy valvetrain, so a little valve noise isnt anything to worry about. Also pull the codes and see why the CEL is on. Good luck!

You heard wrong, S2000s have a timing chain, no belt. Its a crap shoot. If it doesn't run and you part it out, you might can make your money back.
