Default SC Does Burn More Gas

Just finished my first tank of gas after installing the Comptech SC. From my other posts you can read about how the unit performs - GRRRRRREAT!

I'm a record keeper! From day one I've been interested to know my S's mileage. It has been very consistent - just under 30 MPG. A few have indicated their unbelief, but that's what it's been. My first full tank after the SC install produced 26.4 MPG. That's down by about 3 MPG. Driving conditions were the same as those without the SC. I made the same trip I've made many times.

I assume the mileage change is mostly from the extra load on the engine driving the SC when it is below the RPM level that produces boost. This first tank with the SC may have less VTEC time on it than earlier tanks.

Before the SC I've pulled out on a street near my home under hard acceleration, shifting to 2nd gear with a screech. There's a slight turn at the shift point and I'm not at 9k, more like 8k. Today I did the same acceleration onto the main street, shifted to 2nd at about 8k and got a bit sideways. When I returned home I noticed two black strips (about 15 ft long) at the shift point. I am more cautious about VTECing now!

I also get apx. 30mpg with crappo Safeway gas and normal driving. I have consistently gotten 35+ mpg using Conoco gas on the highway.

At the track I get 8-12 mpg, depending on the track and how hard I push. VTEC really chomps on the gas

When I was stock I was getting 20 MPG. I added CAI and went to 22 MPG. I added SC and went back to 20 MPG. I drive in rush hour traffic for 2 hours each day, the only free driving is on the weekends. The SC definitely didn't affect my MPG versus stock. Surprised to hear this, even though it totally makes sense; it's just not what I've experienced.

Garyj,

How do you get 30 mpg? I average 24mpg with alot of daily VTEC. I think I once got 30 mpg on the way back from the S2kdays with 1 tank of gas.

I have to ask. Can you count the number of times you VTEC daily? I must be a VTECing fool!

I'm also surprised at these high mpg reports. Please share with us the method that you follow to determine gasoline usage.

I've been tracking my mileage since the car was new in Jan '01 and the highest I've achieved was "merely" 27 mpg. Most of the time it's around 24-25 mpg, and like you mentioned it's 9-12 mpg on the track.

I'm always amazed at the interest in mileage. It's the very last thing that I even think about driving this car. In nearly 8,000 miles of driving I've only checked it "once" out of curiosity. On a 100 mile stretch of flat-road in South Dakota with the cruise set at 71 mph, top up, air-conditioning on, the car averaged 32 mpg.

Damn! 30, 32 mpg??!!!!?!??

The best I have EVER gotten is 24-26 mpg (I forget which) on a short trip (~200 miles RT), where I only exceeded 100mph a couple of times

I almost never get more than 20-21 mpg in my normal around town/to and from work driving. Like Wesmaster, I also drive in rush hour traffic 1-2 hours per day, so maybe that's a significant factor.

Hey Wes - maybe we're getting 10 mpg during rush hour and 30 mpg all the other times

On the other hand, I do vtec A LOT and we all know Wes does

It's like joe_s2k says -- I absolutely have never been able to count how many times I VTEC in one day (up to 8 or 9k rpm), probably anywhere from 30 to 100. I drove 75 miles round trip last night to visit a friend and the car was in VTEC 90% of the time.
