SC Does Burn More Gas
I've had my S for about 3 1/2 weeks now and have averaged a high of 25.52 mpg and a low of 22.41 for a single fill up.
Combined total average over 1280 miles 23.87 mpg.
50% is Highway driving where speeds probably average around 70-80 mph.... with a few 90+ mph bursts ... VTEC.
I think If I drove at 50-55 mph ( 3k RPM ) 100 % of the time I MIGHT get 26+ mpg

I've been tracking my mileage since the car was new in Jan '01 and the highest I've achieved was "merely" 27 mpg. Most of the time it's around 24-25 mpg, and like you mentioned it's 9-12 mpg on the track.

The the car is a weekender, therefore it is seldom driven in stop-and-go traffic. A lot of freeway and open road. I've thought everyone got that kind of mileage. Whenever someone said they got a low figure (under 25) I just figure they have the peddle to the floor all the time.
Every time I fill the tank I note gallons put in and reset the trip meter. Then I divide miles my gallons and round to the nearest 10th. I have NEVER had under 29.2 until my first tank with the SC.
A friend of mine has a 2001 Type R that he swore he was getting 29-30 mpg. He traded in his '98 GSR which he was getting 30mpg all the time so he was assuming he was getting the same MPG with the Type R, however when he actually kept track of it he wasnt breaking 26 mpg and he drives 55-60 mph on the hwy.
My TL is rated at 19city/29hwy and I average 25.5+/- 1/2(.5)mpg.
I also have owned a '94 GSR 29 mpg, '92 Prelude 26 mpg, '94 300zxTT barely broke 19mpg rated at 18/24, '94 MR2T 22mpg.
I just cant see my s2000 realistically getting better than 26 mpg unless I am driving <50 mph ( < 3000rpm ), especially since many people on this board are easily reporting <21-22mpg.
I would generally think that the people who are getting <21-22mpg are probably really getting into VTEC often.
Actually I was thinking that out of the 1200+ miles I have driven so far in 3+ weeks I would say 1000 miles was with the TOP DOWN !
I wonder if this has any significant influence on the MPG ?
Maybe I am driving the car alot harder than I think I am ?
Sometimes I feel like I have to floor it from a rolling start in traffic just to keep up with MOMS Caravan !
To make horspower you must spend fuel. Your mileage is totally dependent on how much horsepower you are making per moment during each tank. Engine size actually plays almost no part in this. This is why my S2K and Z28 have almost the same milage.
Of course, gearing makes some difference in how much gas you'll use per mile but the horsepower to mileage ratio seems to be reliable for the most part from car to car.

Hehe...It is funny how unbelieving some are as to the mileage issue - last year I ran Skyline Drive with temp down around 40F, hardly any stopping - and I got 34.8 MPG for the trip...coversely I have gotten as low as 19.5 for a tank used strictly for around-town driving and occasioanl VTEC.
I ALWAYS use Amoco 93 or BP 93 (same incredible refining process) and have not yet changed over to Mobil 1 (Still less than 6,000 miles).

My milage is figured by recording the number of gallons at a fillup and dividing that into the number of miles traveled on the previous tank. (ie, 300 miles / 10 gallons = 30mpg). This is _very_ rough, as you can never fill up exactly the same each time. But, it's close enough. I do this mainly out of curiosity, but also it's good to check every now and again as it can be an indicator of engine problems. (ie, when my Bertone's milage dropped from 32 to 18 it was because of a defective battery).
I have always gotten higher than EPA estimates on my cars. Probably due to my effort to avoid tickets
I basically only VTEC onto the highway or to pass, otherwise I never get about 6K RPM. Also, 90% of my daily driving is highway / light traffic, if you are in stop & go traffic you can usually divide your mileage by 2.
Consider, I get 30ish normal driving (5% VTEC), 10ish on the track (95% VTEC). If you do lots of VTEC'ing I'd estimate your day to day mileage in the low to mid 20's. As someone else stated, it's all a matter of how much $ you want to spend on power
