Stupid question but I come to this site to learn. I get the 70+ in a 35 mph zone being too fast. I get the apply gas and turn into the skid. But what is the problem with being in 5th gear into a slopping away curve?

BTW - he said it was an '04 without VSA

I think it has been mentioned already but it looks like it was lift-off oversteer.

5th gear at that speed lacks the power to transfer weight to the rear tires. I've gone off track doing that...trying to downshift from 5-4-3 and I went 5-4-5. I didn't have power to get the weight on the rear wheels and the car just slide sideways.

From the look of that drivers seat, he's very lucky to be alive

I couldn't have said this better myself! When I first watched this video, I saw the low revs, speed and looked at the shifter and said in my mind "oh no- why is he in 5th?!"
This is just as bad as going through a curve on a motorcycle in 6th gear and having the revs drop to ~3k....ouch.

So why does being in a lower gear (higher revs) transfer more weight to the rear end and reduce lift?

Ever floor your car?
Notice the difference between doing it in let's say 2nd gear vs 6th at the same speed and how the back end squats down (in lower gear) as the weight transfers to the rear?

Whereas doing the same thing at the same speed but in a higher gear or with less power availble doesn't give you that transfer of weight.

In case anyone didn't notice his link. Here's his car pics.

I guess it didn't help that he had crap tires.
