Default Scion FR-S review

I was reading a review of the Scion FR-S in Autoweek last night (the Subaru BRZ is also reviewed but in automatic form) and it was funny how much it sounded like what a review of the S2000 might be if it was written today. They described the car as being a "sports car" not a "sporty coupe" and suggested it was "...light, tossable, and fun" and not to hesitate to hammer the throttle and have a good time because "...the car was made for it." That this is a car that "...might steer away the poseurs..." to leave more units for the "true sports-car drivers."

Anyway I just thought I would mention it in case anyone wanted to check out the full review. BTW - the car came standard with the same tires as the Prius so no wonder they found it extremely easy to induce power oversteer.

Too bad they can't put the top down like an S2000.

Have you noticed how all the reviewers are biased?
Have you noticed how in road and track's review they picked it over the car with all the better performance metrics?

We've got a few locally now that are commanding well over $30,000 on the lots. Are people serious? If you want a flagship six speed RWD car you're grossly overlooking the C5 Z06 for LESS money and a WHOLE LOT more car. I was on board with the FR-S when it was in concept and pre-production but it's really not my thing now that it's been released and the Hype is already outweighing everything else in the world. If it was FAST, then yeah I'd be more on board but FFS it got manhandled by an S2000 in a STRAIGHT LINE. Slow.

I really wish I'd never read the magazine excerpt when they were talking about putting the much more venerable 2GR-FE under the hood before the design was final. I'd of already bought one if that was the case...Those 2GR's can move big heavy weights like the Avalon around very very well.

Oh gosh $30,000?

Hey Froth you are just asking for someone to bring up pushrods and leaf springs lol. After all, the original poster was talking about a magazine review. In my opinion the third generation chevy small block is one heck of an engine. I hope to get a C5 Z06 after I move on from the S.

I agree with you on the 2GR-FE. I had one in my camry. It was quick. The transmission blew up at 35k and the engine started leaking from the timing chain cover around 70k. I won't be buying a new toyota anytime soon.

it's a knife in a gunfight scenario if you ask me, the Genesis is coming up with 348 hp now, even if the Genesis doesn't handle as good you could upgrade the handling quite easily. I think they missed the boat in the power department at that price level.

If the FRS was around 10 years ago, it might have made sense. I can't count the number of ways the S smacks this car even if the S was built >10 years ago.

BTW the resemblance to a Hyundai Tuscani does not help.

The BRZ will be coming out with an Sti version I think right? That might be decent. The current models I don't care how well they handle etc they are pathetically slow.

The Saturday before last, I agreed to meet a friend at Power Toyota in Buena Park and give her a ride home after she dropped her car off for service. While I was sitting on a bench o/s of the showroom, a salesman approached me and i told him I wasn't there to buy a car. I had noticed an FR-S in the showroom and asked him how long it had been there and he said it has been three days or so. With all the hype, I figured that they had marked it up so I asked and said that they don't add mark up to their cars. Still waiting for my friend to arrive, I went into the showroom to take a quick look a the car. It had an auto trans and was silver, I walked around and looked at the window sticker. This car had a factory sticker of +- $26.000. However, the dealer had added some options that I didn't originally notice. The car had TSW wheels with what appeared to be OE tires and they were a $3,395 option ($800-$1,000 total value??). The wheels looked to be very similar to what an OE wheel would look like. It also had some sort of armor plate protection for $495. It may have had some other upgrade (seat protection?)but I can't recall. The total price was just under $31,000. The seats looked nice but the car, in form that I saw it in, was nothing to get excited about, in my opinion.
