Default Screwed by ins co

I posted here about a month ago about having my top slashed and seats stolen...(Nov 28th)

Well, it took my ins co almost a month to release a check to me to pay for the damages... (Mercury Ins) I have an allowance of 30 days of rental coverage per my policy. Well, since I didn't get the check from the ins co till this last Wed (Oct 26th) I have been fighting them to get an extension on my rental car coverage... They won't do it.. No matter how much at fault they were for negligence on getting the check to me, they won't provide extended coverage. I had my agent go to bat for me, and I have also tried numerous avenues myself. Am I just screwed here? (BTW, they took betterment on all the damages, they didn't provide payment for the full amount)

Any advise?

Yes your probably screwed. I have not heard of Mercury Insurance but they have the right to deny you an extended rental. They do not have to hurry the check along either. That being said most insurance companies will help just for good customer relations. USAA has gone the extra mile for me many times but it all depends on what your insurance wants to do. You can fight them but it would cost more than its worth. Sorry!

call and talk to manager of the insurance company direct (not the agent, the actual company)..and explain everything..sound sincere...and let it be known that you dont have that money to spend on the rental...
Then if that fails, call back a lil while later (or next day) and say that your going to the Attorney General of your state.(read the Att. Gener. site first on every guideline about that situation,it may be written actually)..He might fold when he hears you spoke to lawyer already (and for a check that small, its a big chance he'll give in)..Ive dealt with a shady dealership on something different,,and lets just say..."lawyer" and "att. gen" are huge words to their ears. gd luck

That's the part that's

They don't have to hurry the check along!!!

Try taking your own sweet time when it's time to pay the damned premium and see what they do!! There is NO excuse to take "that" long to issue a check on something like this. If they'd have paid the claim in a timely manner, he probably wouldn't have "needed" the darn rental car for a full month or at the very least, no more than a month.

Best of luck on this one. Let us know how it works out.

<stepping off of soap box now!>

If your state has an insurance commissioner i would call him or her. If there's anything that can be done they'll know.

Unfortunately only if they do something illegal will any insurance overseeing agency step in. They usually will step in when an insurance refuses to pay such as when they fail to respond to natural disasters like in Florida or some clerification is needed when it pertains to a law.

That's exactly what happened... by the time I finally get the money to start fixing my S, the 30 thirty day coverage for the rental car is up! Slimy Bastards!

Obviously, I'm switching ins co's asap, and I'd advise anyone else to steer away from Mercury Ins...
