Default Screwed! (well... sort of)

I noticed last night that I had a big ass screw embedded straight into my rear left tire, about 1 inch from the outer side. I pulled it out, and it was a full half inch deep. Does anybody know how thick the stock tires are there? They are less than 6 months old and still have good tread. Do I need to have it fixed?

Thanks...

yes, you should get it fixed. leaving a screw or nail embedded into the tire, whether or not it is all the way through should be repaired.

If its not all the way through, then you will get a bubble in your tire. Its important to make sure when the tire is patched (NOT plugged), that the individual at the tire store will poke all the way through to prevent the air bubble from happening. The air bubble will separate the tread in a small area on your tire.

Take it to your local tire store and tip the repair guy a few bucks. Most places will do it for free. (most, not all)

Me too - a week ago with a wood screw in right rear. I had it plugged and didn't worry about the patch for the moment. It was straight in and not too near the edge. When I can find a good performance tire shop in my area, I will have it patched internally for insurance. Meanwhile most of the local yocals don't use glue on weights for balancing. IMO, if you take the tire off the rim to be patched it needs to be balanced.

I didn't leave it in, I took it out... or did you mean leaving the damage of an embedded tire? If they don't plug it, How is the hole fixed if it doesn't go thru to the inside where (I assume) they patch it? The damage is only on the outside... Sorry if I seem a little dense on the subject, but I've never had to have a tire fixed... the only flats I've had have required the whole tire to be replaced.

Thanks...
