Serious ECU tuning
When Prolene and I went to the SEMA show in Long Beach, I saw this very interesting booth with no girls, no cars, and almost no physical products you can see - but it had a wide plasma screen (more than $10K in cost, I'm sure) running an interesting video. I asked for a copy and got one and took it home. Well, I didn't really watch it until just yesterday, and what I saw really got me excited. This company, called Hondata, specializes in tuning ECUs for Hondas.

There was a portion where it showed how their software can control the throttle at a pre-determined rev (for racing purposes): say you're doing a quarter mile run, the worst thing is to have the RPMs drop down below VTEC engagment point. Well, the software allows you to (when the throttle is disengaged) keep the RPM up wherever you want (say 7K), so when you shift up, it'll start at 7K.
Pretty cool if you ask me.

I like this statement:
"Plug in power? Many companies claim to give your car "plug in power" with their chip, but in many cases this fails to work. Why? Honda got it right first time! They spent millions developing their engines and computers for optimum performance. If you have made some modifications, it is unlikely that an aftermarket computer chip programmer has the optimum fuel and ignition values for your car. At best their chip is a guess"

Richard,
Doug the founder of Hondata is an acquaintance and a good guy. He's been doing development work for about 2 years now and has done a great job. Guys like Doug, and others like Jeff Mathews of Zdyne (I have his ECU in my forced induction CRX) are true pioneers.
Doug is a land speed record holder in his native New Zealand where he managed to push his B16A CRX to 147 mph on the stock engine with just some minor tweaks and some aero work.
He intends on doing development work on the S2000 ECU, but not for another 6 months or so. His is a small operation, even though he is now part of the UPRD group in Orange County. If anyone who has a Mugen ECU would like to take the cover off and photograph the internals it would be useful for Doug as he doesn't have an ECU yet and knowing whether Mugen had to add another board or simply replace the stock PROM gives him a good starting point for working on decompiling the stock code.

Nope, that's another guy (and it was cam sprockets). I know lots of people here in SoCal in the aftermarket biz. I just hope I don't have to leave my network behind - but all the best jobs seem to be elsewhere :-(
