Shift knob design contest
If you wanted a real custom shift knob design, what shape would you like? I'm planning on developing a few prototypes with titanium in the next few weeks. I thought about those ergonomic, pistol-grip with finger groove style shifter, do you think that'll be comfortable? The round ball style is too easy, IMHO.
Sorry, no Greg Steven's sculpted head on the shifter, and no nude female figures either
anyone with the winning idea that produces more than 10 orders will receive one for free. That's my last contest for the year.
Don't forget that I still have the alloy foot pedal contest at my old website: www.geocities.com/s2k_mingster/
Just sign in and fill out the proper fields. Aeroscreen contest is over, sorry. Please post your ideas here or email me.
Thank you.

It depends upon the preference of the driver. If you like your hand over the shifter, a sphere is the only way to go. If you like to shift with your hand upright there are more possibilities, but it may depend upon the size of your hand.
I prefer my hand over the shifter and would not have anything but a sphere, so the Voodoo shift knob is my choice.
I believe Mugen among others offer shift knobs for the upright position but they are a compromise shape. You could use clay to shape a more ergonomic shifter in a couple of sizes but I think people tend to grasp the knob differently, so the compromise may be the only choice.

I vote for a 'sideways egg'. Seriously, I think Chris is right that over the top shifting is preferable. I always remember the Hurst shifter in a childhood friend's father's Mustang. Was real nice when we 'borrowed' the car. ( The aftermath wasn't so nice)
For the S however, I wouln't want an 'ergo grip' like that, but a symetric egg that sets 90 degrees to your hand would be nice. Kindof like a Baldwin colonial brass door knob. The only problem would be setting it at the right angle without a set-screw or locknut. I leave the engineering to you, but if successful, I would buy. In fact, I would buy a Ti sphere like the Voodoo if it were substantially less expensive.

Hmm...how about an upside down egg? you know, with the top portion more rounded, having an elongated oval shape?
i'll make a sphere knob first, but that takes all the fun out.
BTW, does anyone have a spare AL shift knob for the S2K? Prolene?

I also shift with my hand on top of the knob, although in a top right, top, or top left position to get some pressure towards the gear i'm going for. This reduces the number of missed shifts. So a knob with some kind of rounded top is the only thing i would like. What's left to design is of course material, surface texture, color, shift pattern etching... so i guess there could be any number of combinations even with a round knob.

I'd like a compromise between the stock knob and the sphere. I shift from the side.
Here's a test.
Stand up, arms at the sides, totally relaxed.
Which way do your palms face?
Towards your side-Hand on side of shift knob.
Towards the back-Hand on top of shift knob.
It's an old golfers trick to find a neutral relaxed grip position.
