This statement is wrong and right at the same time.

You aren't going to "wear out parts" by resting your hand on the shifter. I suppose there might be a tiny bit more wear on the bushings, but it's not likely to make any difference.

But resting your hand on the shifter is a stupid and dangerous habit. Your hands should be on the wheel, not on the shifter. Unless you are actually shifting at that moment, of course.

 

well there is wear going on. when you rest your hand on the shifter, you are loading a transmission component (called a slider) against components, either the blocking ring or the gear stop. This will cause accelerated wear on the softer-metalled blocking ring, which will soon lend itself to popping out of gear. It can also cause an overheated gear from the additional loading. This will not show itself until fatigue breaks it.

 

Well, I won't fight you over it. Especially since either way, the result is the same. Drivers should not keep their hand on the shifter. Or anywhere other than 9-3 on the wheel, really. No matter how cuddly the passenger is....

 

There are exceptions to every rule.

 

The engine damper is made by J's racing and is available from retailers who carry their products. The installation is not complicated and takes about an hour.
