Shift lights are great in old tach-less vdubs. You've got a tachometer; you don't need no stinkin' shift light!

I have shift light - The BIG RED flashing thing at the end

shift lights are typically installed so you dont have to think about looking, listen for sound, nothing at all. its merely a way so when you hit say...a hundred or two hundred rpm's *before* you want to shift, then it will go off, and your reaction time to that will then make the shift which will be at the optimal point.

back in the days of racing Mustangs you'd use them because its most likely, the exhaust next to you is louder than your own and you cannot go by feel, and those crappy Ford guages - you just didn't want to look down at.

its a good idea, I'm not going to discredit that, but only if you are wanting to drag race it. of course, for any road racing, I dont see why not if its that fast of a course where you are changing gears that much.

For $100/hr. I'll sit in your passenger seat and yell out, "SHIFT"!

If that's the case, I'd rather just buy one. Those hourly rates will kill me in the long run. I used to have an Autometer tac in my civic before it got stolen along with everything else in my car. I liked it because I usually can't hear the car over the blasting music.
