Default Shifter vibration - Normal?

Hey all, got a quick question:

I recently test drove a used 02 stook at a local Honda dealership....during the drive, the shifter was vibrating like crazy! Is this normal? When I was under WOT, the shifter vibrated so bad, I thought it was going to pop right out of the gear that it was in!

TIA!

Mine does that that too. But with the new Voodoo Shift Knob installed today, the vibrations are less dramatic.

a heavier shift knob might reduce some of the vibrations that are present.

My E36 M3's shifter used to rock back and forth in first gear but was silent in other gears. Odd.

In many cars, the shift knob is connected to the tranny via linkage, which adds slop and dampens the transmission vibrations. Much of what you're feeling with the S2K's shifter is the actual vibration of the engine and tranny, since there is no linkage. The shifter goes right into the transmission. I consider those vibrations as "positive feedback".

BTW, you shouldn't be putting any force on your shifter while it's in gear, and you're not shifting. This can do damage to your tranny over time. You may want to do a search and read more about this.

J's Racing makes an engine dampener that takes out most of the vibrations.

It's because the car has soft motor mounts.

yeah don't rest your hand on the shiftknob when you're not shifting, this can prematurely wear out the synchronizers.

Meh, I decided to check this out ont eh way home today. Occasionalyl it gives a big shake but its never anything that looks like it'll pop out of gear. And like slalom said its normal i guess. As long as it doesn't pop itself out of gear.. that would be scary.
