Default Shifting 101 on S2000

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I been on the board : ) I been practicing shiftin since s2000 is my first manual car ^^

Well, I have pretty much master the downshifting and double clutching with rev matching and on my way to heel toe. But just before I get to that I have a few concerns with my car.

1) I notice that when the car is not moving and I have the clutch disengaged, either at neutral or not, when I rev the car to about 3k I feel a slight tickling/flicking on the cluth. If it's less then 3k or over 4k I no longer feel/hear it. Anyone know where/what is doing that and if it's normal.

2) When I launch the car, I notice that, if I successfully release the clutch in < 1sec, I get a really smooth boost, while if I take my time and slowly release it, I may feel a slight jerk right at about 1sec range (although it was a smooth clutch release.) When it's done <1sec, the car sway a little at the back, I am guessing I may have successfully spin the wheel on the release.
comments?

3) I have trouble pushing into 1st sometimes, especially when I have stopped. I find the smoothest transistion (downshifting from 2nd - 1st) is when the car slows to about 8km/h. However, if I miss that point and stop the entire car in 2nd, I would need to rev to about 3k-4k in neutral, inorder to smoothly engage my shifter, independent of whether the clutch is in or not. ??? When do you guys usually downshift from 2nd-1st. Cause I find that If I am to slow to about 20km/h I would need to shift down to first, otherwise the engine feel weak when going around 20km/h in 2nd.

4) Lastly, for now : ) is it bad to start in 2nd? I notice our S2000, or at least mine ^^; can easily start in 2nd, but would require releaseing the clutch very slowly (holding it about 50% for a while). Is this really bad on the clutch?

Thanks everyone : )

all I want to say is be careful on launching your car, I launched my cars couple times since I purchased it at 150 miles used and I had a pressure plate failure due to this...

I wouldn't come out in 2nd gear - riding the clutch is *generally* not a good thing.

I would not ride the clutch out on a launch... that is a no-no... either dunk it over 6k rpm or drive normal.

Ehh, from experience... after shattering the clutch in my S2000

1) don't ride the clutch... AT ALL
2) don't dump or floor the clutch at start (1st gear)

What this means.. SLOW take off.. (not much low end torque), but after you fully release the clutch.... hit the gas pedel all the way.. and hopefully you feel some kind of acceleration hehe. If you want a quick take off, I think an American Sports Car is the way to go. You can dump the clutch all you want. Our S2000's OEM clutch is pretty weak.

??? am I missing something? why are you double clutching? Do you just mean rev matching? Do you know what double clutching is? there is no reason to double clutch on cars nowadays due to synchros.

hmm I aint' sure if it's called double clutching or not. Well basically when I rev match I do the following.

Say I am going from 3rd-2nd
When I rev match: I clutch in, rev to the proper (higher) rpm, push in the shifter, then let go clutch and accelerate some more

when I double clutch: I clutch in, push shifter from 3rd to neutral, clutch out, rev to desired (higher) rpm, clutch in again, push in shifter to 2nd and go.

I believe, although there is the syncro to save me, when I double clutch I am saving that 1/1000000 of the life time of my syncro : D

LYMO eh?

I wouldn't bother. It really isn't necessary. Unless ofcourse, if your synchros are bad.

I noticed that clutch ticking thing as well! I have a 2002 Sebring Silver...

Anyway, didn't know that about S2000 clutches. Thanks for the info on that xviper!
