Shifting Techniques
Jim, I'm happy to see you took my post so well. It wasn't meant to offend. Just didn't want to see the lad to do something he'd be sorry for later.
I see you are new to the boards, so welcome. How far away are you from the Seattle/Redmond area? I've met those folks last summer and they are a great bunch of people. They meet up every Tuesday for drinks and just to B.S. Great fun! See here:

It's a looooooong thread but if you look at the first and last couple of pages, it will give you an idea what a fun bunch of goofs they are.
They are planning a group drive up to Vancouver, Canada the first weekend in May. I'm getting as many of the Prairie people together for this meet and the B.C. guys are going to gather their people, too. It should be a good gathering. Maybe I'll have the pleasure to meet you?
Dave.

Seattle is a 1.5 hour drive on a good day = no rain, no troopers. Was looking at the Portland group as that is much closer. But when the weather cooperates, a trip to Seattle would not be out of the question.
Getting ready to put on new tires and start tweaking my S2K, had it long enough to know what I'd like to work on. Mostly low end grunt, not that the S2K is going to match my Suburban in torque but every little bit helps.
Oh, and that would be averaging 95mph or so to do the drive that quickly. More like 2+ hours at the limit.

I think it's great that so many people still know how they shift. When I was learning, whoever I asked said they didn't know what they do, because they never think about it. That's not good advice for a novice.
The key to the 1-2 shift is to make sure that the revs don't drop too low as this will cause the car to jerk. So, a shift less than 4k will likely wind you up with revs in 2nd that are just too low to prevent the car from reacting in a negative way.
If your intention is to drive the car in a conservative way, you should try to shift no lower that 4k rpm and no higher than 5k rpm. This will keep you in the lower rpm sweet spot and help keep you gas mileage reasonable. However, if you are wanting more performance, just put your foot in it, count to 1 (that's "one mississippi") after the VTEC kicks in and shift. Oh, yeah, hold on!

thanks for the help and support guys. This last 2 days i've been revving up to 4k and the shifts were great. I guess on my post when i tryed to shift at 4k then i would have a feeling of driving it hard and faster which messed me up. I've been trying to shift normally at 4k and it seems less jerky than 3.5k but thats in the afternoon. Shifts for me are good in the mornin but in the afternoon i guess i get too comfortable with it and thats when the slight jerks are felt. Just wondering with those slight jerks are they visible if someone looked at you driving across the street; would they barely see it or would they know you
ed up???
ed up???
darn forgot to say this on my last post but in the afternoon i feel trying to get to 4k is faster than tryin to do it in the mornin, maybe thats why i drive differently in the afternoon. When u do hit the pedal to gain speed quick such as getting to 4k quik or even when the car is warmed up it gains speed quicker i find that the technique doesnt work as well as downhills. What do you guys do downhill to get a smooth shift as well as revving up fast and shifting
To be conservative on a downhill grade, you could shift at almost any rpm you want. You could shift into 2nd at in between 5 - 10 mph as long as you let the clutch out slowly. When the clutch is all the way out, make sure you give it very little gas to prevent the engine from chugging. Once your above say, in between 2 - 2,500 rpm, then you can give a little more gas.
