Short block replacement thread.
Okay here is an update. I took my s2000 to an indipendant dealer. They said my "Bearings are locked" probably due to low oil. (excuse the laymen's language i will admitt to very little automotive knowledge)
They say there is no need to take the engine appart because, simply put, i need a new engine and taking the old one appart would simply be added expense.
Now my oil change was late, my car died with 27,000 miles and my last oil change was at 18,000miles( i know u are supposed to change it every 5,000miles) i have had five other cars which i took much worse care of and never had a problem and my oil light never came on
I would love some input and am willing to take some much deserved criticism.
1) is there any need to take the old engine appart?
2) As for a new engine, is there any reason to avoid a used engine( and would it be a problem in a leased car)?
3) Should my car have died if my oil wasn't changed in 9,000miles and the oil light never came on?( i know there was some oil in the car because i checked the dipstick and it has oil(old oil).
5) should Honda be responsible for the repair or am i just a bonehead for not changing the oil on time? Is this oil eating phenomenon a problem with the car that has aflicted others?( the shop had an s2000 with a similar problem recently)
thanks

You're supposed to perform an oil change every 3000 miles and change your oil level at every fill up or at least once a week.
If your car had 5.5 quarts of 9,000 mile oil, I don't think you committed enough of a "bone-head" to void your warranty. If you last checked your oil 9,000 miles ago, then BONE-HEAD. But if you checked it and it was full, you were only 1,500 miles late and the engine shouldn't have seized.
The truth is that changing the oil every 7,500 miles is really a very conservative recommendation. All of us "anal" car buyers do it every 3,000 miles, but that is more religion than science.

well input appreciated. It is very nice to have this forum which allows me to get advice from people with more knowledge then myself( and i can take the criticism)
i guess i'll get the engine swapped out and i have learned a tuff lesson about getting the oil changed regularly( is it smart to learn to do it oneself? or not worth the hassel?)
I have mixed feelings about going after Honda. I have no problem taking responsibility for my actions( although the trend in this country is not to take responsibility, but rather find someone to blaim "its gotta be someone elses fault"), but on the other hand i really do not like the style in which Honda treated me. They were real Jerks, and it seems like they are quick to try and void a warenty( that book gioves them quite a bit of "outs")
Should the fact that i was at 9,000 miles since the last oil change( which will never happen again, and all my friends and family are suddenly changing their oil) mean the engine would fail or is there a problem that Honda should take some responsiblity for?
well thanks again for the input/advice

BTW, which dealer did you take it to? Some Service Departments, like Rick Case and Braman Miami, are known to be more understanding and flexible than others.
If I were you, I would just admit fault on the low oil issue and see if the dealer and AHM are willing to offer a good will fix or at least split the costs with you.

I'am going to chime in bought a used 02 and had the dealer do a history of repair and found out that the short block and head where replaced do to previous owner down shifting to a lower gear and over rev the engine causing it to seize up they said it was number 4 cylinder and the head and short block was replaced on 3/20/2003 I just hope that the new block came with The 4 updated Engine Oil/Banjo Bolts. Btw. dealer split the cost came to 7K
well Jap Auto pro came up with two estimates $9,600 for a new engine or about $8,200 for a used one with 4k miles on it. I decided to take Mav's advice( thanks Mav) and i called Rick case Honda and they were much nicer, responsive and sympothetic than the inital service dept at Maroone Honda. So i've had the car towed to Rick Case because i figure if i am going to get a new engine i might as well have it done by a Honda dealer. I should have more info tomarrow
