Short block replacement thread.
Short block replacement needed and new pistons. 01 S2K purchased 07/00 delivered 11/00 and currently 27,000 km. Developed clanking sound took it to dealership and found scoring in my cylinders.

Shattered piston (#?) at 14.7k miles. Engine replaced under warranty. #1 cylinder misfiring 5k miles later. Dealer denying warranty coverage due to overreving at downshift. Never overreved at downshift, never taken over 8500 RPM (rarely over 8000) after engine replacement.

I've added four more failed engines to the top post on this thread. I'm sure I'm missing a few from this board.

can someone explain the tap-tap noise?
I have a noise (it sounds like tapping or valve train noise). It is only noticeable when the car is cold. After I let it warm up for 5-7 minutes it goes away completely. Is this tap-tap death noise a constant noise that is present even when the engine is warm?
Thanks.

Barry,
I too want to thank you for keeping the list updated. . .
With regards to my '01, once the valves were replaced, severe oil consumption has become virtually nonexistent. . . And the car is running fine. . .

Here's a link to the Bimmer board reporting their more than 100 E46 engine failures. If I had the skill and energy, this thread would be as visually appealing as what the BMW owners have done.

Yiannis's failure makes 33 short block replacements, probably all due to lubrication problems of one sort or another. In another thread he posted the following:
Ringwurm/ others....
something similar happened to my car ('01 model, 8k miles a week ago). I have the Speedcraft kit but I baby this car more than anything else (no hard accelerations, no dropping the clutch, no over-revving etc). After a short acceleration on a straight road (again nothing extreme), I noticed a clicking (metallic noise) from the engine bay.... It turns out that I need to replace the connecting rod and one piston at least at cylinder #1. My mechanic told me that this was the result of poor lubrication of the pistons.
He explained that in Europe there was a TSB asking dealers to replace the oiling screws with ones that have 4 holes to increase the amount of oil that reaches the pistons.....
You all may want to replace these screws.... They do not cost much and they can save your S from serious engine problems...
