I had media passes for the CART Grand Prix of Monterey last weekend and snapped this photo in the Herdez Motorsport mechanics area:

I wonder if they actually use 5W-30 for the race cars. I would expect them to use a 10W-50 or something.

I saw Tony Kanaan carrying around a bottle of Mobil 1 he collected from Da Matta's car as a joke. Maybe it was an empty bottle, and you found it?

Da Matta said he doesn't use it because he has to use his sponsor's!

Keep in mind everyone. Engines used for racing are torn apart and inspected for wear after every race. It's not like they drive them 3750 miles and change the oil and filter.

I heard from someone that Corvettes come out of the factory with Mobil One used in the engine. Can anyone verify this and how would this effect break in like the S2000?

Add Boxsters to the list. They even have a label in the rear trunk saying something like "we used Mobil 1, you should too."

When Mobil 1 was being developed it was used in the Williams Formula 1 cars. It was top secret back then and good for a considerable amount of HP compared to the conventional oils of the day. In a sport where tons of money is spent for a HP or two it made a big difference. Now it is used by many race teams if for no other reason than it is still good for a few HP over conventional oils.
