Default Should i get one?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the S2000 community, but i've always thought it was a great machine. I really want one, but i'm concerned that I won't be able to handle it. You see, i'm getting my license soon, and the only things ive ever driven are a CR-V and an Accord. I live in South Texas, so bad weather isn't really a big concern for me, and i'm a conservative driver on the street, so i'm not too worried, but i wanted to make sure before buying one.

If i do get this, or any other sporty car, i'll be as active as possible in the SCCA, so i'll be learning how to race the right way.

So, is this a reasonable car, or should i go for somethin else? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

In my opinion, it's not a good first car to have.

Just my two cents though.

Since you are getting your license soon, sounds like you are a teenager. You'll be begging your insurance company to lower your premiums. Its a nice car, its a fun car...and its damn fast!

I'm not too worried about insurance money, because the car payments and insurance will be my only financial obligations. However, if it's unreasonable to think that i could handle driving a car like that, then of course i'll reconsider. I don't want to end up like all these other young drivers you hear about on the news, and i don't want to make my family suffer because i got a car i couldn't handle, and got killed in it.

Buy it, don't learn how to drive on it, drive safe, and you'll be fine. (& stay out of VTEC for your first week & during rain/cold)

You sound responsible for your age, but in my opinion an S2000 is way too much car for a person your age, and your experience level. Just my .02

You might be able to survive owning an S2000, but I think you'd have a lot more fun with a roomier car that you won't obsess over.

Get an S2000 when your life is a little more settled ... or as a 2nd car. I don't think I'd have enjoyed an S2000 at 16. I mean, it's a hot car and I can understand the appeal and the desire to own one -- but you'll be doing a lot of fun stuff with friends, etc. that might make the S2000 a less than ideal car to own.

If I had a 16 yr. old son, I'd encourage him to get a used Ford Explorer or something. He can borrow my S2000 on nice Sundays (if I'm not using it).

I'd say go for it, but remember to test drive, especially before ruling it out...

At your age check out insurnace costs. You might be spending $1k for a few months. Yes, an S2000 is a great car, but you should also look into picking up a used Miata as a fun convertable. You should be able to pick these up for a fraction of what an S2000 would cost. Saving you some money for aftermarket parts/ and or insurance. You can still race SCCA and will cost you a lot less.

Asking if you should buy an S2000 on this site is like asking a fat kid if he wants cake! If you can sport the bills I say get it, but if you miss treat the car it could be a very expensive move. I might recommend getting a 99-00 civic si and work your way up, you will still get vtec, 8000 revs and a great package while saving some coin. I had a couple and loved them. Good luck and enjoy
