Default Should I use an S2000 for my next build?

Hey everyone,

Trying to determine whether or not I should use an S2k for my next build. How possible is it to get these things to run 1/4 miles in under 12 seconds? And what supporting modifications would be required? How much would I be looking at for the cost of the build not including the original cost of the S2K? I've seen a lot of people pushing huge amounts of power with stock internals, but I'm unsure how safe that is.

So for the vehicles I have in mind are an S2K, 996 Turbo, LS3 Corvette or a N54 335i. If I got the S2000 I could still keep my G35 for my daily driver and have an all out track car too!

Thanks

Why try to make a car designed for twisties fast in a straight line?

People have done it, but the stock transmission and differential will have to be upgraded.

You can make any car run under 12 seconds if you have the money. It can easily be done, but like JDrum stated above me, the car is designed for twisties.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm aware the car is designed for handling which is one aspect of the car I love, and if I could retain a large chunk of that handling while modded that'd be great. I also realize that any car can be made to run sub 12 seconds, but it's the amount of work it would take to get a platform to that point that I'm interested in. I hear a lot of people running high WHP S2K's with stock internals which is something never that a G35 owner would never consider so that is what initially caught my interest.

I am open to rebuilding the rear end -even the 335i would require and aftermarket diff- depending on the cost even. How much would I have to spend to achieve my goal of a sub 12 seconds S2K? How much would it's handling be sacrificed?

Thanks

Canehdian

P.S another reason that the S2K is on my list is because I keep hearing owners talk about these cars ability to take a beating at the track with no issues. With the way I drive my cars I wouldnt expect a BMW to last a full year before I sell it due to issues.

Definitely possible to reach your goals with a supercharger or turbo setup, but a new transmission and rear-end would be recommended as those are more likely to go before the engine on stock internals.

Turbo/Supercharger Kit with engine management & fuel systems: $6000-10,000 (depending if you want the option to upgrade and crank out more hp)
Transmission: V160 / T56 swap
Differential: Ford 8.8 / R200 swap

Some companies to look into:

Full-Race
Full Blown Motorsports
Kings Performance
Inline Pro
Science Of Speed

Can you further define exactly what you're after? You said a sub-12 second 1/4 mile car. Is that so you can run the car at the drag strip all the time or just because you want a car with that amount of power? You can get by on the stock transmission and differential in an S2000 that is capable of sub-12s as long as you aren't launching it, so if your goal is to simply have a car with the power necessary to run 12s but not actually go to the strip every weekend you can cut down on your costs.

If you actually want to do the drag strip thing all the time, then you're going to have to upgrade the differential almost immediately. The transmission can probably hold for a long time but you'll want to be careful not to powershift especially on the 1-2 shift since 2nd gear seems to be the breaking point.

Thanks for taking the time to write detailed replies guys!

I'll have to look into those companies a bit and do some research.

You've got it Syn. I don't intent to 1/4 mile my car it the time was just to give a ballpark of what I was looking for. That being said I do launch my car on a fairly regular basis though not at the strip.

Thanks

1/4 times are nearly useless for all performance driving, less dragging. My juiced up family sedan runs about 12s 1/4 mile. 99% of the time it's never used. Why would you spend $6-10K to make a handling car fast in the 1/4 mile?

I won't be tracking my car. Power is my main priority although I would like to retain a good amount of handling. Any better ideas for an all out car? Basically a 911 is exactly what I'm looking for but too expensive

SC Corvette would be your best option if POWER is your priority with HANDLING being second.

While the stock FC20 and FC22 hold good power the rest of the car doesn't fair as well. Tranny/driff/drive staff along with the small tire size are going to make it costly to go crazy power.

If you're looking for a 400hp S2000, no troubles there 06+, SC kit and Hondata. If you want 600-700 you're better to go with the Corvette. It should be cheaper, more reliable and easier to drive.

I have to ask. How old are you? Has this desire to make a 12 second street car that will never see a track have anything to do with a recent movie release or a desire to measure dicks on public roads?
