....Significance....
I always found the tach a nice feature of the S2000. The sweeping motion made it easy to time and make for quick shifts. I never felt the need for a tach once I adjusted to the car. I felt that just the addition of the a counter sunk shift knob, keeping my clutch fluid cleaned, and keeping my transmission fluid clean that the S2000 was a complete joy to shift.
If your issue is accuracy then you may want to check it against the output of the OBD-II port. Drive at a steady speed and compare the RPM on the dash with the ECU.

I really like the stock tach. It's easy as hell to read in your lower peripheral vision, it's large, it's bright, and it's not obtrusive.
I have no doubts about it's absolute accuracy - i mean, it IS a digital setup afterall with seemingly no lag.
The spedometer lag is intentional.. it would be really really annoying if it were to continuously flicker 32-33-34-33-32-33-32-33... every 10th of a second.

it would probably kill the battery faster too

I actually prefer the stock digital tach when it comes to redline shifting..
i think its easier to see the RPM's rise on the stock tach (AP1 atleast since it stretches across the entire cluster)

If you want to moniter the RPMs get the VAFC thats the only thing I liked about it when I had it. And you can even get a few HP form it
. If you worried about your timing when shifting get a shiftlight or the modfry shift beeper thing (sorry forgot the name of it)
BTW Stock works fine for me
