Default Skid pad rating

hey guys, just wanted to know how the skid pad rating is determined, and does this directly translate into how well a car handles when driven to the limit? Does tires effect skid pad rating?

related question for the more-expert-than-myself masses on s2ki:

besides tires, what modifications improve skidpad on the S enough that my 'butt dyno' notices the lateral g improvement?

(front sway bar, lower springs?)

Tires are the only practical way to get a big increase in grip.

Lower mass, wider track, and lower CG. will all improve grip, all else being equal (which it never is), but it takes a huge change in mass, track, or CG, to get the kind of gains you can get with tires.

A dramatic increase in grip requires some returning of the suspension to keep the inside back tire from unloading during hard corning.

Skidpad is useful for both testing and training.

hmm..do people do side by side comparisons of different tires to specific cars

example...my car has 225/255 RE01's.... wonder what my skid pad rating would be at that point... then maybe an r comp tire.... seems like that would be the best way to compare tires...

Sometimes The Tire Rack or one of the automotive magazines do this kind of comparison.
