Snorkel Type CAI for 2004/2005 model Honda S2000

I've been requested numerous times to manufacture a snorkel type air intake extension for the MY2004 & MY2005 model S2000 which, as most of you will know, sports a substantially different front bumper and grille to the earlier models.

The Item

This project started in November 2004 and after some shipping back and forth between continents the finished prototype below was designed, developed and trialled with the invaluable assistance of bigfecker from the S2Ki UK contingent.



This snorkel (finished in 'moonrock') is now being sported on bigfecker's Royal Navy Blue Pearl S2000 (below). bigfecker has removed the plastic radiator air dam in the image below but this can just as easily be retained. I provide an easy to use template with each intake for just this purpose.



A major challenge with the new intake is the horizontal strut which you can see to the far right of the image below. This was not present on pre-2004 models and most new model owners have expressed the wish to retain the bar. i.e. not have to remove it from the car in order to fit a snorkel.



Shown below is an image of the snorkel demonstrating how it fits snugly around the bar. This image is looking down from the front left hand side of the vehicle. There is no clip needed on the inlet of this model snorkel as the bar holds it in place superbly.



Here's another perspective (below) from the other side of the car demonstrating how we have this unique problem work for us.



The image below shows the inlet end of the snorkel which we have modified to suit the new bumper and grill shape. We have kept it as high as possible in the grille opening. The edges on this image are not as well finished as the commercial product. As mentioned previously this is the finished prototype only. Expect better finishing all round on the production model.



The Installation

If you think it's going to be difficult you're wrong. Installation is basically identical to installing our previous pre-2004 versions. Full online photo installation instructions are available.

Feedback

There will be plenty I'm sure and all is welcome. Reproduced below with permission is bigfecker's feedback on a question I posed to him during testing...

Something else of interest will be whether the indent for that bar affects air flow substantially. I believe it will be neglible myself but will await your verdict. Take your time. Give it a good test out.

I don't think the indent affects it at all, I have been out several times and given the car a good VTEC'ing and stopped and checked all is ok. The top of the CAI where it enters the airbox is cold to touch so lots of air is getting pushed in. The car also sounds slightly different, a bit of a deeper note to the
engine.

Looks great. It is nice to see someone making custom stuff for the S2000. If I had an 04/05 I would be all over this.

Any before-and-after dynos? Not looking for any major gains, but some "proof" of no losses would be nice, particularly with the notch for the horizontal strut.

Is it safe to have the inlet of the snorkel so LOW to the ground?

would you ever consider to make one with a bigger opening on the main bend like the size of mugen/j's opening?

if i go back to stock intake i would buy it even if it meant cutting my hood, actually i would like it more than the current piece.

however, good job and these pieces look great.

It can't drink water. You need a different type of CAI for that. This type of intake retains the factory airbox so your engine is protected just as the factory intended. You will not find anybody with this style of CAI who has hydrolocked their engine.

You'll find the snorkel inlet is actually positioned higher than most other aftermarket CAIs with the exception of one or two (PRM etc).

Actually, the added iindentation is the least of the obstructions on the way to your stock airbox.

Where the snorkel crosses the radiator, the cross-sectional area of the snorkel is reduced very substantially. From looking at another brand of snorkel, where it crosses the radiator is just barely the same number of square inches in cross section as exists in the smallest part of the stock inlet.

The only thing is that the twists and turns of the snorkel impede air flow. When I installed an exhaust system for a kitchen range, the installation guide said that a 90 degree elbow in a 6" pipe had the resistance of 12 linear feet of 6" pipe.

The issue is whether that effect is offset by whatever added air pressure that is created by having the inlet facing the front of the car at speed, or by the gains due to having the colder air coming into the engine.

This probably won't keep me from trying this snorkel, though.
