so i'm out front of the house, waxing the car (it's finally stopped raining). now... i admit i was wearing a pair of ratty pants, had a big baggy sweatshirt and watch cap on. whatever...

so this older guy comes walking by (nice clothes, grey hair) and stops to look at the car.

"nice work," he says. "how much do you charge?"

i smile at him and reply, "ummm... actually i'm not a detailer. this is my car."

he looks shocked and says, "really?"

then he looks at the car again and says, "oh! it's a honda! of course."

and walks away.

i didn't know what to say. the only thing i could think was "DICK!" and somehow that seemed like a lame response.

Ah, the wonderful reputation Honda has built for itself based on dependable, AFFORDABLE (AKA cheap) cars. How much formula one success does it take to add another dimension to thier reputation? Too bad they don't have a NASCAR team. Maybe more people would be exposed to just how much Honda knows about making a fast car (as opposed to just a chap one).

You should have said, "I'm doing it for this Ferrari's owner for only $1195.00, since it is such a rare car, but I'd consider detailing your car for my standard price, $1350.00"

knitted cap, fits tight to the head, rolls up. think world war two merchant marine wearing peacoat and hat (this is that hat - albeit in a different colour).

That is one of the main reasons I bought the S2000, for the non-ostentatiousness.

amazing how ignorant the masses are...

on the other end I always get the classic "Is THAT a HONDA?" and my response is always, "No, actually I put the Honda badges on it to lower the resale value...NOT!"

Your post reminds me of the story of the African-American family that moved into an all-white neighborhood. It was a Saturday morning and the new neighbor was mowing his lawn. A man from up the street was driving by and stopped to inquire as to how much he charged to mow the lawn. The new neighbor replied, "Oh, I don't charge anything, but I do get to sleep with the lady of the house!"
