That's nothing.....when I first bought mine (April/07 and 57K) I wanted to swap out all of the fluids.

Here is the quote for the Brake flush, diff and trans.....drum roll please

$385.00

BTW, I work for the parent company, so that was with my discount.
I propmptly reported it to the region fixed ops director.

The price dropped to $120.00 for everything.

I did it myself a couple of days later.

This is some really shady stuff.

I got a service done on my civic, I had directional tires on it. I told them not to rotate them.... they did anyways. I'll kill someone if they **** with my S or try to charge me up the ass.

Back when I worked as a mechanic, I worked at a shop that marked up ALL parts by 300%. So we'd take the $10 part, divide it by 0.33. and get $30. The owner wasn't smart about book hours, so we'd usually cut a break on labor. But this type of markup is SOP for most shops. That's why they hate it when you show up with your own parts.

That's not the only reason. I don't think I would want to take the professional risk of installing parts that might be of any unknown history or quality. Too much liability that the part will fail and the customer will blame the installation.

dealers are always going to charge you more for anything.

when I went to the mitsubishi dealer for an oil change, they quoted me $80 for 4.5 quart of mobile one synthetic oil. Just for the oil, that you could get from walmart (5qt) for $19.99.

it's part of the "doing the business" cost added on to it.

Generally the only warranty on the part is from the supplier, so the installation is done on a clear "no warranty" basis. Then if the part does go bad, the customer returns, and the mechanic gets the satisfaction of saying "I told ya so", and gets to make the labor twice. I've seen this happen with track-auto remanufactored alternators.

EDIT: I get to go through this today, since I'm putting new rear tires on my car. Locally, even the honda dealer doesn't stock the OEM tires, so I have to order them from tire rack, and get them installed locally. Usually the tire places aren't too bad about this though.
