Default So I test drove an s2000 today

It was an 07 with 88k miles listed for 16,997, located in lake worth Fl.

I absolutely love the car, my first impression was that pictures don't do it justice, and it is much smaller than I thought. Especially the instrument cluster.
One question in particular. The clutch had no friction for the first inch or two, there was just nothing there. After that inch or two it finally grabbed and had pressure. Is this a sign of a weak clutch? I feel like it should be grabbing immediately...

I'd appreciate any tips in particular you guys might have for me, as I will be buying an s2000 very soon.
Also, are there any mods you guys would suggest I do right away to the car?
Thanks in advance

I think that is normal for a OEM Honda clutch. I say this because I have been driving Hondas for 8 years and have gotten a good feel for how the OEM clutches act. From my experience, they have a specific feel to them. The pressure on the pedal will get lighter the farther you press on the clutch, with a distinct change in effort. In my honest opinion, I would rather have an OEM clutch with 90k miles on it then a new aftermarket clutch.

That being said, 90k miles on an 07 means the car has been more or less a daily driver, thus meaning more wear and tear. I would look for an older model year with less miles that was driven as a second car if I was you.

My clutch (2004) has pressure right away. Check master cylinder for leaks, fluid for air, etc.

I have an 07 and have driven other ap1s and sp2s in the past. I must say that 07 seemed to be a strange year because both my car and another low-mileage 07 I drove have very light, high-releasing clutches compared to 06 and down. I'd say it's normal though. Unless it's hopping, chattering, or skipping you're fine.

AP2s also have a clutch delay valve, which promotes delayed engagement. I removed mine and it made the clutch stop slipping during high rpm shifts.

^What RedCelica said. My07 also has a very light clutch, with a high engagement point. You should be ok.

Where is the clutch delay valve and how hard is it to remove?

It's in the slave cylinder. There's a DIY that explains how to remove it. Or if you want to avoid that, you can spend a few bucks on an AP1 SC.

Edit - here. https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/275...-cylinder-mod/

You can adjust the freeplay on the clutch rod which will affect the engagement point. At 88k miles you should expect to do a clutch replacement in the future, every car is different depending on how it was driven. Maybe in the 100k-160k range give or take 20k miles as a guess.

I've got a friend with 170k on the original clutch. Track days, 1/4 mile etc. hard to say how long it will last.

That price seems very high, doesn't it? Mine was a nearly pristine 2003 with 51K miles when I picked it up in November 2012 for $13.5K. (I live in Tampa). So it seems like you could do a lot better on the price, or get a lower-miles one in the same price range, or both. Maybe you should post up some more details in the official "Is this car worth it?" thread. Anyway, glad you like the S, and welcome to the forum!
