Default so much for the famous Honda reliability

Well, reached my 600 mile break in point on my week and a half old 2002 last night, revved it up into VTEC a few times and tooled around, and then this morning it lurched and started sputtering and misfiring after it hit the 6K RPM point. So I limped it into the dealer... they tell me it needs two new ignition coils.

I sure hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

I guess while they're in there, they can make sure the spark plugs are torqued down correctly BTW, you were showing 3 bars on the digital temp gauge this morning when you tried to VTEC .... right?

I agree, the cars probably fine, just not warmed up. Too bad the dealers rarely tell new owners that they cannot VTEC before the car is warmed up. Then again, revving an unwarmed motor is never a good practice.

Yes, it is covered under the warranty. The car was warmed up, I already drove it about 5-10 minutes before hitting the freeway. I wasn't aware though that VTECing it too cold could cause this problem. How would this damage the coil?

I wonder if it was driven while cold and VTEC'ed before I bought it?

I wouldn't base Honda reliability on a couple of bad coils. Right now my Celica is in the shop getting an entire new top end put in because my valves smacked the pistons. I don't think Toyota reliability is any less than it was before I had this issue.

He didn't say. I don't think he knew too much, he told me that the car needed "two new coil springs." I said, "do you mean ignition coils?" and he said "yeah, that must be it."

Two new coil springs, huh? I'd find another dealer, since it sounds like the guy got his technical expertise working at Burger King.

What are the odds that two brand new ignition coils are going to go bad simultaneously? 5-10 minutes may not be enough warm up time, if it was really cold there this morning, and you didn't get three bars before hitting VTEC. Did you try going above 6K after the car was good and warm (say 15 minutes later)?
