Default Soft top tear fix

Mods,

If this is not the correct forum please move it. This is one of the most detailed fixes I have found. I will be attempting it tonight, so I will post results soon! Wish me luck!

This is a nice writeup, thanks. Hopefully I won't let mine get to the point of tearing...patches on the inside where wear is starting FTW!

I did that fix using a vinyl repair kit. I even found a close grain pattern that made the repair nearly invisible. It worked ok for about 1 month - but after I raised and lowered the top a few times the repair started to fall apart. The vinyl repair glue doesn't hold up well to being stretched and folded when the top goes down.

I tried all kinds of different glues and tapes but they all fail after the top is lowered a few times. I ended up buying black elastic waistband material (so the material will stretch) and I waterproofed it with Tear-aid, then I sewed it on over the hole. It's permanently fixed now, that patch isn't going anywhere (I sewed it by hand and I made sure to use close, tight stitches).

Where did you find the waistband material?

Here's a link:

I was planning to bite the bullet and spend the $1500 to have a new Robbins top installed before winter but this saved me. Total spent was about $15 including the Tear-aid and shipping/handling (I already had the needle and thread!).

Unfortunately I had already spent about $50 trying out different glues and tapes.

Results:

SHITTY!

Was not flexible enough and busted open as soon as I put the top down. (I let it cure for 48 Hours.)

NotSure, if it would not be too much trouble, would you post a pic in this thread of what your repair looks like, as I think that may be my final option. (I am not spending $1,800 to put a new top on an 8 year old car!)

Thanks!

To the people with porr results, are you ironing on a patch like the write-up?

Yeah, I ironed on a patch and used tear-aid to make it waterproof on the backside of the patch. I think the elastic band fabric fix is my last hope.
