Default Softop and rain...

I've never owned a convertible before and was just wondering what happens to softtops in the rain? Is it ok to leave the car sitting out in the rain for 8 hours or should I be looking to the hardtop for the rainy season. I live in the SF Bay Area so it would only be rain I would have to worry about. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Should be ok. Working in San Jose, I use my S as a daily driver and often leave it out uncovered for 8 hours straight. Hasn't leaked yet.

So there is no danger of the softtop becoming saturated with water or anything right? I mean, I know it won't leak into the car but is it bad for the top to be exposed to a lot of water? Thanks for helping out a newbie!

Our top is vinyl (PVC). The next dominant species will be digging it up to learn what we were like. Don't worry about water damage or staying wet. Just don't leave it down (folded) when it is wet.

Some other tops are canvas and can have any number of problems with water.

According to the FAQs on this site, the softop is canvas and is not waterproof. They say that you must spray a protectant on the top to keep water damage from occuring. Is this a big enough deal to use a hardtop during the relatively mid winters here in the Bay Area?

By the way, the FAQ says "MOST" tops on todays convert's are canvas. Look at the picture below the words and you will see that our top is PVC. This is why I always look at the pictures first. Can't stand reading stupid, neverending posts like mine. . . . . .

If HouStooks don't have a problem with hurricanes, you won't have any issues with what passes for "rain" in the Bay

I did notice a couple drops of water on the seats after using a pressure-sprayer to wash my '00. Hasn't happened in my '01.
