Default Softtop Rip Prevention (2007+)

Hi everyone,

I have a 2007 AP2 and I know that there is a section where softtop rips are prone.

I tried using the search function but couldn't find where I can help prevent softtop rips for the 2007+ models.

Thanks!

Glue some patches on the bottom of the softop where the clamps fold into the top and the back back drags on it when shutting.

I would also sand down the corners of the softtop clamps that is where rips into it

Don't forget the Modifry elastic straps.

One thing that has never been addressed to my knowledge in all these threads, is the temperature. I wonder if colder temps during operation place more of a stress on the top than when it is warmer. (Or the top has warmed up in the sun). Does someone living in Phoenix have less top issues than someone in Pittsburg?

I don't have my manual handy, but I seem to remember something about not operating the top below certain temps.

I was able to source some material from a forum member that had replaced their top and salvaged the material. It was perfect as I could cut the patches to the preferred size to make the repair come out very nice. I used E6000 adhesive to bond the patches in and used magnets to hold them on while the glue cured.

I had actual tears in my top as well. I ordered this stuff off ebay: Cabriodoc Convertible Soft Top Repair - BLACK Cloth Fabric Vinyl for all Brands | eBay

I highly recommend it! The material smells like it will kill you when you apply it and it cures very quickly. The final result is a very sturdy seal that looks nearly invisible.

I used a black vinyl fabric on mine purchased for the cheapest I could find a small bit online...It was more of a function over form thing for me as my old S developed tears and my new one showed signs of wear. Also as Cosmomiller said make sure you elastic straps are in good condition and not stretched out. That is one of the issues that causes rubbing when the top is being lowered because it does not get the proper tightening.

BONUS TIP!!!! *free of charge* When you lower your soft top assist the middle bar by pushing down down on it and it will help preserve your top and the elastic straps.

Thanks for the eBay link vit & thanks chuck for the good detailed pictures. Chuck would you suggest applying that to all the corners on the inside where it wears? And is the gortex repair kit a peel and stick kind of thing ?
