have been on and off this board since getting my s2k Sept 1999 (first day they came out - I think Sept 17?) and have vin #175 in the US with 104K miles. I STILL am absoultely passionate about this car and it is still a total blast to drive. I maintain it perfectly and take it regularly to redline. Just ordered a couple of months ago a new Z4 M coupe but the S2K stays! I will have what is one of the ultimate convertibles and a great muscle car coupe... so close but different in a way. Will never give up the s2k 9K is too addictive! What a great car! Still...
Do you have any mods? You are probably a great example of how to keep the car in top shape!

If you don't mind me asking, out of curiousity, have you had any problems out side of regular maintenance? Is the convertible top original? Clutch? Diff? Etc? How do you drive your car? Auto-cross? Clutch dumps, etc? Just curious! Congrats on many great years! I really hope mine comes out the same way if I keep it that long!

- Convertible top: I've gone thru 2 and am about to upgrade to a canvas top w/ glass window. The frame design has worn the OEM tops in the same spot (above your shoulder on both sides) even though we added reinforcement patches.
- Clutch: original made it til 84k. 2 clutch dumps just because. Very satisfied with the longeavity.
- Brakes: I changed the rotors and pads at 75k, and still had some meat left on the pads. Again, very satisfied.
I drive the car on a daily basis and give it a good workout whenever the opportunity arises. No track days, 1 auto-x but LOTS of spirited canyon/mountain drives.
I've only modded it lightly performance-wise (Comptech Intake and HKS Exhaust). All other changes are for comfort/asthetics.
All in all this is the best car I have owned of the 5 I have tried (2 VW, 3 Acura).
I do all the maintenance myself

I have #144, and it turned 50,000 miles last week.
To answer questions made to the original poster, as well, I paid sticker for the car, no markup, but they added options that I had to buy as well. It was around 36k plus tax. The car is totally stock except for a speaker upgrade and Rick's leather cover over the area between the seats. We did the second gear grind fix, and that's all. Plastic window has held up, still cleans up to about 90% clear, and no problems with holes appearing in the top. It has been garaged every day of it's life and except for a few small door dings, and the front lip curb scratches, it's like new.
I must add for thruthfulness, it's my wife's daily driver, but every time I get behind the wheel, it sees 9Krpms!
Plan to keep it until our bones are too creaky to get in and out anymore.
We bought it September 18, 1999, the day after the release in the US. We were first on the waiting list, for about 15 months. They weren't gonna let us drive it until we paid for it, till I told them that would never happen. Took a young salesman with me and I hit 117 on the test drive. YaHoo.
It has seen one day on the track, BTW.

No complaints (other than the BS plastic rear wondow).......
To answer the questions: paid list! I had a signed check I gave the dealer with "i will pay list" on it as I knew month before this was going to be a hot car! The dealer was good and honored it though many backed out if I remember the posts on this board. In Silicon Valley at this time I remember a dealer asking $50K. I got lucky.
For maintenance I drive it hard and change oil every 3K miles and just about to change plugs. I go through lots of so2s but the pads have only been replaced once (I know weird and I do brake hard). Clutch still fine thought I change transmission fluid carefully and do all scheduled maintenance listed. Still same top but it is close to going and actually was thinking about replacing it this morning as I was driving it.
Dont have M coupe yet as I ordered it and should get it in late sep or very early oct. It is Interlagos blue which is a hard color to get right now (all early vins are mostly black or red).
But the most important stat/info of all: i still fxxxing smile when I drive it hard and it is rock solid. Waiting for the new NSX if and when but then again I love light, purpose engineered sports cars. The M coupe will keep me content for awhile but I will never tire of my S2K!
