the gaskets are on the spark plug. you don't change the gaskets on the plug to the new type of gasket, you change the plug itself. this helps the plug stay in there nice and tight, whereas the old plug had a tendency to work itself loose /sometimes/. mine is now done, and it feels, well, like i just put new plug in my car. this TSB/recall does NOT apply to aftermarket plugs. if you already changed 'em, what's the point in going back to stock?

 

I called my dealer about this, & they don't even have the replacement plugs in stock & said to call back in about a month! Must not be anything too urgent!

i can't believe that a dealer doesn't have 'em - mine /volunteered/ the TSB without me asking about it - they had the kits in stock!

 

I have not received any recall letter from AHM yet. But what about the other part of the "recall" from Europe (the so-called "4th cylinder" problem)? How come AHM did't say anything about that? Reference these previous postings:

The post by Ronald mentioned replacing "oilbolts" with 4-holes (instead of the original bolts with 2-holes). Anyone ever discuss this part of the problem with their American Honda service people? Just very curious.

 

utah- seems strange that the new plugs are the same as the old except for the gasket-
i did note that a difference is the torque for installation (new plugs are torqued differently). i guess because of the different gasket?
maybe they replace the plugs in case the old ones were damaged by bad gaskets?
sure would be nice if honda would give us explanations!

 

So if we det aftermarket plugs what should we torque it to, 13 or 18?

 

Since the S2k plugs have been bumped up to 18 from the original 13, I say to use at least 18. . . or higher if that's what the plug mfg recommends.

 

I agree, I'd torque to 18 w/any plugs.

BTW: Got my letter today...

My theory on "product update" is to avoid it looking like a recall from a PR perspective.

Now statistically Honda has fewer recalls--simply by defining them differently.
