Default speakers

Anyone know a decent pair of off-the-shelf speakers I could use to replace the crappy ones I have now?

Try Polk EX602a. People like them and since they are fazing them out for the newer models you can grab a sale somewhere.

Add rear speakers too

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the different options? especially those that can just plug and play without any cutting and will not interfere with the window?

What size speakers fit without having to cut? 5 1/2? 6?

I too replaced the crappy stock door speakers. What a difference that made. Just had two tweeters mounted on the dash (at the corners near the post). That addition was probally the best improvement in being able to "hear" the sounds. Now I don't have to crank it up to listen!
Do a search on replacement speakers and you should find all the info you need. That is what I did.
Good luck.

lucid is the man!
with lucid's rear speakers you might even find those crappy front speakers improvement so great that you can live with them-
my two cents- go with his rear speakers then decide what to do with the fronts.

i went with boston acoustic pro audio 6.5's in the doors, and their neo5t's in the pillars.
i agree with firsts2k--the ambient tweeters make a tremendous difference.
also, consider adding an amp for the best roof-down-driving sound experience.

Do the 6.5's fit in the doors without any cutting?

I hate to say this but I will here. Go to the top at try a search for either "front speakers". There are two acknoledged "experts" here on the board. Pinky was the first to get the controls right with aftermarket and Lucid developed the rear speaker system. After your search send these two guys a "PM" to discuss your budget...y9ou won't go wrong. The greatest weakness is in the head unit though............
