Has anyone attempted to install speakers in the plastic panels behind the seats?

Seems like this would balance the speakers in the doors pretty well (using fader control). The speakers would also be higher and closer to your head. Are the seats so close that it would muffle the sound?

i would argue that it would both muffle the sound and give the listeners some wierd phase distortion.

Honda should have done something like those Special Edition Miatas awhile back where they had speakers built into the headrests instead of cheaping us out!!

Are there any speaker wires back there behind the seats(already prewired) or do we have to run the wires back there from the radio? Does anybody knows? Anyone already put in any rear speakers? I'm thinking of putting a pair back there.

There are no wires back there. Infact, there are no wires coming out of the head unit for another set of speakers.

There is a fader control (in the 2001 at least) so I would be surprised if there is no output for a rear set of speakers. I agree that Honda has not run any wire for them that I can find.

Anyone know about this sub coming out in January? My dealer had a picture but few details except that it installs under the driver seat. Will they wire this to the rear speaker outputs? It must include an amp or it would be useless. The case appeared to be plastic which makes me think it is low quality.

There is a fader control in the 2000s as well. At first I thought this meant that we were likely to see 2 extra speakers mounted in the hardtop but this is obviously not the case.

I suspect that just about all stereos come with faders nowadays and this is probably just a generic head unit used in lots of other Hondas.

h2000:
It wasnt just special edition Miatas. All Miatas until MY1999 had 2 ~3.5" speakers in each headrest. Except for the 1995 M-Edition which was the only year Miata to have adjustable headrests. They really helped the clarity of the music at highway speeds. But component speakers help more.

Sorry.. I've owned 2 Miatas and am some kind of Miata savant.

I remember owning a Pontiac Fiero back when they came out in 1984 I believe. It had speakers in the headrest, too bad it was such a pos car.

Y2K++S2K:

The are two fake grills on each side of the head unit. I asked in a previous post if anyone had put speakers there after drilling out the (fake) holes. Unfortunately I didn't get a reply. I'm still wondering if that'll work or whether the door speakers and any speakers mounted either side of the center console will tend to cancel each other out.

You might want to consider doing it. Are you brave enough?
