speed-craft turbo kit rip off
I'm amazed that someone that doesn't have a running turbocharged S2000 and quotes prices that nobody can actually get has the bravado to knock Speedcraft. These guys have turbocharged close to 10 (I'm guessing here) S2000's and they've done that for a reason. These guys are all very good at what they do and I'm not just talking about Dwight here... they're also my friends. I've known them alot longer than I've been on this forum and regardless of what anyone has read on here or heard otherwise they're also really good people. If I respond with a little more 'emotion' when people who have no right to judge anyone are picking on THE BEST. I have yet to see any S2000 other than a Speedcraft car run mid to low 12's. I've heard lots of smack talk but nobody has stepped up to plate yet. I wish you the best of luck with your car and let us know how long it takes you. Dwight and Todd did my car from start to finish in less than week including fabricating the exhaust, fabrication on FMIC, fabricating all piping and gauges/boost controller installed.
Oh cripes, you got the turbo from a friend who works somewhere, and others could easily find a good priced turbo (exactly like yours and the Speedcraft unit) on Ebay? And you're quoting costs and stating that Speedcraft is a ripoff even though you haven't even begun to assemble/install your kit yet?
Tell you what, I'm beginning to look for a B.S. flag. That may be wrong, and when you get your kit up and running, I'll say I'm sorry. I'll even go so far to say that if you come down to SoCal, with your receipts for your parts (especially the turbo), I'll dyno your car for free.
Keep in mind I don't sell Speedcraft stuff (actually, I don't sell any products) nor do I want to own a Speedcraft kit. But I find your statements to be a bit premature, even outrageous.
Hwang, I already own one formerly naturally aspirated car converted to FI. It isn't easy or cheap to do it right - and to me right means full engine management that can handle boost (which no existing kit has, which makes them all incomplete IMO), proper bottom end setup (lower compression), and at least some semblance of emissions legality. Furthermore, I don't see much point in the Comptech/Vortech setups for my needs, and while I love the power curve of the Speedcraft kit, I really dislike the throttle response and overall behavior of the engine. There is something very special about a nice normally aspirated engine. The only FI approach that comes close for all around attractiveness (to me this means it works both as a daily driver and track car) is a positive displacement supercharger. Instant boost response, solid gains across the power band, minimal noise, etc. If someone were to put together a 5-6 psi Lysolm blower (preferably with an intercooler) I'd be very interested if I could also get engine management for a decent price. Such a kit would be lucky to produce 275-280 whp, but it would also produce over 170 lbs-ft of torque at the wheels from about 2500 rpm to 7500 with nary a hiccup or bump and even sharper throttle response than the stock NA engine. There's a reason why so many OEM cars use positive displacement superchargers - they work and their performance envelope is very pleasing to most drivers.

UL
Screw that UL, I found the BS flag and I will throw it up.
First you say "Got the turbo from a friend who works for garret/hi-flow or whatever..."
Then you say "sorry for the choppy posts..but anyway, you can find lotsa great turbos on ebay, mine was brand new.
Also, my wastegate was brand new too, and ebay as well
"
Well which one was it? Your second posts implies that you got the turbo off of ebay. Do a search on "ball bearing turbo" on ebay and you tell me how many you find new and in that price range. I'll tell you ZERO!
Prove me wrong, take UL up on his offer to help you tune the car. Shit, I'll pay for the tank of premium gas for you to get to his shop, after he tunes it.

Because you can piece together the parts for a turbo kit for less than
an established competitor and then calling their effort a "rip off" sort of resembles the time and tested internet auto forum argument that sort of goes like this, "The BMW M coupe is a rip off because for $7K, I can buy an early 90's Civic, throw a tangerine paint job on it, invest $5K into the motor and run 13's for a lot less than that $45K Bimmer. Gee what a rip off."

QUOTE from krzys2k- you can get all these things piped in at your local muffler shop, or car shop for about 300-500 dollars depending on their prices per bend.
I would like to find a 'muffler shop' that can do all of the pipe work that Speedcraft does and only charges $300-500... I bet you would have a VERY DIFFICULT time finding a muffler shop that would even attempt it.

Why is everyone bashing this guy for being able to piece together his own turbo kit for half the price of speedcraft's kit??? All he is trying to achieve by posting his costs for his turbo is to show that it is possible and w/in the reach of fellow frugal S2k owners to build their own turbos at a reasonable price. He is definitely not telling everyone to stop buying speedcraft turbos nor is he telling everyone that you should piece together your own kit. He is just trying to prove that there are different routes you can take besides speedcraft. And the prices that he lists are just ballparks numbers for those who do attempt to build their own turbo kits. IT IS NOT SET IN STONE!!! We should all give this guy a hand for trying to help us out. He definitely did for me.
