speed-craft turbo kit rip off
i actually got it all put together, although i had to change some things such as the turbocharger (the exhaust housing was too big, and it wasn't ball bearing, sorry about that) anyway, i did get a turonetics t3/t4 half ball bearing for 650, which is still cheap. And the piping did come out to be a bit more than i expected due to some hoses and other stuff, but in the end, it still came out to be about 3200 without the piping...with piping, it was up to 4000, which is still 2200 difference from speed-craft. It should be all in by next week, i'll keep you guys posted.
Tony,
Look at the title of the thread. "speed-craft turbo kit rip off". To me that says he's calling the speedcraft kit a ripoff. And since he says in his first post that very thing (in fact, he calls it a major rip off) I think I didn't miss his point.
However, he's done nothing to back up that assertion. An assertion which chafes me a bit because I applaud manufacturers and tuners who are willing to go out on a limb to try and offer us solutions to our needs (power, handling, whatever). If the Speedcraft kit didn't work, I'd be the first to call them on it, but it does work, and having seen it first hand, its nicely put together.
Now he's come back and told us that he really wasn't getting the turbo he said he was - and now he's only $2200 below the price of the Speedcraft kit, and that's with an inferior turbo. With the same turbo, he'd be lucky to be $1500 cheaper, $1000 is more like it.
Now, when we get down to the facts, you can make an accurate value judgement. If saving $1000-$1500 is worth the time and hassle of assembling your own kit, then by all means, go for it. If saving $2000 and getting an inferior turbo is worth it, by all means, do it. Just make sure you understand exactly what sort of time and effort is required to do so, because it isn't as simple as calling up a shop and giving them your cc number. And you get no support when you run into problems. As long as you understand all this, you can make an informed decision. Personally, having gone the do it yourself route, I prefer to pay someone else to do many things on my car. There's an old adage that I've modified for my use -
"Try everything once, that way you know how hard it is and can decide for yourself how much time and $$$ its worth to pay someone else to do it"
If you've ever changed a clutch or timing belt on a FWD Honda, you'll probably agree with me that its usually worth it to pay someone else to do it, but you won't know till you try it :-)

I think if Krzys2k would have just started the thread with "I pieced my own turbo kit....at this price...." and let people decide whether the Speedcraft kit was a rip off or not then the reaction to this thread would have been very different maybe even applaudable. However I think that its nice that you did piece your kit together and saved some money as long as even turns out fine. But many people start flaming sponsors or businesses that develope things for our s2k and that touches some nerves. If you were to say develop a Leather console for the s2k for a quarter of the price then congrats to you but if you do that then start claiming that Ricks leather console is a rip off (which is NOT what I claiming just using for example) then many people are going to be upset.
Just my opinion once again.

Well said. There are plenty of capitalistic opportunities for us all (with the motivation, time and money) but one's efforts don't nulify every other competitors. I'll pay .50 for a cheeseburger but that doesn't mean the $7 monster burger some gonzo grease wheel joint down the street is offering doesn't taste good.
The "rip off" verbiage turned me off but I do applaud your effort.

I'm just taking a wild stab at it, but i'm guessing this is written by a high school kid that really has no idea about the car. Come on, revhard's manifold is much better than speedcraft's? Even with the install and misc. parts that will be needed to bolt it on, i'm sure your gonna be spending just as much as the speedcraft kit. But with the speedcraft kit, you get a backing by a very reputable company that will be there for you when something does go wrong. And that is priceless.
