Speedometer Question
Our shop was repairing a 2000 S2000 and we had to replace the speedometer (it was a theft recovery). We had a speedometer from a 2001 S2000 parts car. When we installed the tach, all of the LEDs were working and lit up (upon starting the car). The mileage, however, does not show anything. It remains completely blank. We think someone might have tampered with the odometer (trying to take back miles) and somehow it put the odometer in a "theft/roll-back" mode. When I talk to the dealership, they are unsure and want to charge large sums of money for diagnostics. I was wondering whether anyone knows anything about the odometer and could offer any solutions. Does it have an anti-rollback feature. I will have another odometer for parts; is there anything I should replace. Would appreciate any advice you can provide.
Thanks!
Thanks!
To my knowledge, there is not really a way someone can "mess" with the odometer on an S2000. The S2000's ECU keeps track of all mileage via the VSS. The odometer on the S2000 is nothing more than a display. No actual information is stored in or on the display, as again, that function is maintained in the ECU. The ECU is also not programmable and therefore cannot be changed. If nothing is coming up on the odometer display, you may want to check the wiring and fuses.
My "fire damaged" s2000 arrived at my house similar.... but all of the lights on the dash were extremely faint.... like I could only reall see what they said if the sun hit them just right.
I assume your warranty is already done, so maybe you should do what I did.....I just bought a new cluster on ebay for $200 and moved on....
My new cluster only had 5k miles on it.
(my car is track only so it really didn't matter).

I have always wondered about this, if the mileage is kept in the ecu what happens when the ecu needs replacing? Can the dealer reprogram the new ecu to the proper mileage? Can the dealer reprogram a ecu to a lower mileage?
i am like 95% sure that my new cluster had less miles than my old cluster...i do not think my new odometer showed the same as the old one....i think the old one had about 9k miles and the new one was at 5-6k roughly.
i thought some kind of ECU (maybe not the actual ECU??), not the gauge cluster, stores the mileage and the gauge cluster odometer is nothing more than a display. however, it's possible that this ECU or memory device is stored somewhere on or with the gauge cluster?
you would have to have honda "fix" the odometer to read the correct mileage. otherwise it will eventually be found out to be false. after all when you get your registration redone, and get either an emissions test or any kind of government inspection, they record your mileage.

several anecdotes give me the impression that it is the guage cluster that records the mileage. It's probably fed from the VSS, but I believe the actual logging is in the cluster.
The dealer can change it from what I hear. Whether they know how is something else entirely.
