Those of you who have been to the annual August "car weekend" in Monterey/Pebble Beach/Carmel and Carmel Valley know what a mega-event it really is. This year it was the biggest ever - the Concorso Italiano alone drew 700 Italian exotics including 350 Ferraris. Among them, two F50's, four F40's and four F550 Barchettas. Not to mention a dozen or so irreplaceable '50's cars. Plus about 100 F360s, dozens of Countachs and Diablos, four Murcielagos, one McLaren F1, the new Bugatti Veyron (1001 hp and much better looking than the magazine photos), a Bugatti EB110 Sport, a Pagoni Zonda and a 959 thrown in for good measure. And that was just the Concorso...
Given the gravitational pull this weekend exerts on car people worldwide, and the need to arrive in something - anything - that's at least a little bit special, you often spot unreleased new models in the ebb and flow of traffic or in various parking lots around the peninsula. (On the other end of the spectrum, one year I spotted a priceless, perfect 1956 Testarossa 250 Pontoon Fender sitting the parking lot of a local watering hole. Talk about bragging rights...)
Anyway, this year I saw two identical metallic sky blue Infiniti G35 Coupes (no, not 350Z's), one with a Michigan distributor plate and one with a Michigan manufacturer plate, parked not at all near each other at the Concorso. Not light weight enough to appeal to me, but for you spy shot fans:
I saw a silver G35 Coupe on an LA freeway a few weeks ago - California manufacturer's plates on it, two Japanese guys driving it (presumably from the Nissan Design Studio). I must say, the car is VERY striking in appearance when seen in person. I kept speeding up and slowing down in my rental Protege5 to get another good look at it. IMO, photos of this car don't do it justice.
Of course, driving it is what counts - can't speak to that....
