Sprayed here with Plasticote Brake Caliper paint from Autozone, 1 year ago. I also used Decal Girl's decals on the fronts only. Both still sparkle like new after each wash! (Total Investment $20 and about 4-5 hours of my time)
And no, you don't have to remove them from the car. I did spend about an hour each with my Dremel smoothing them. If you want/need more detailed instructions PM me or search for Caliper Paint, we have had lots of discussion about it.
Yes, it's apparently a high temp vinyl decal. I haven't personally tracked my car yet. But seems most report they don't fade or burn with anything less than a full-on intensive track day (auto-x and even some track events don't seem to affect them). Street use and regular cleaning when you wash your wheels keeps them looking new.
brush painting near the rotor would be much easier than spraying near the rotor, neither are difficult.
I personally took the caliper off the mount, took out the pads, put paper over the rotor then remounted the caliper just with the bolts in a few turns just so there was no stress on my brake line. This allowed me to cover over and tape off everthing I didn't want painted but I didn't have to bleed my brakes when done.
you dont have to take off the calipers to spray paint....
cover the car in plastic sheeting....cut a hole for the caliper to poke through....mask with tape to get your straight egdes and make sure the pads arent visible.
Its easy and it takes no more than an hour or so.
I too just used a proprietry spray paint....cost me $4.99 a tin.
make sure you put a high temp primer on first and youll have no probs.
