kuni came over to help me paint my calipers today. while jacking the car up we heard a snap- no idea what it was until all four tires were off. then it was clear-
after driving this car for a year and a half, there was a spring spacer left on the car!!! it was found on the right rear-
the dealer had checked and i had checked (obviously neither of us checked closely enough).
kuni and i concluded that it probably was at least part of the reason that i lost the rear of the car some time ago (ended up rear end into a curb).
lesson? to properly check for spring spacers, take the wheels off!!! (thats a lot of work just to check for spring spacers).
Wow, that's crazy. Do you feel a difference in the ride now? I'm sure it's a lot softer now. And if it was on one of the rear wheels, don't you think it could have screwed around with your differential?
I realize this wouldn't guarantee that all are removed, but can new owners ask for their spacers at the time of delivery (as anyone can ask for their old parts after service/repair)?
My car had this little warning card with it that explains removing all 14 spring spacers (10 front, 4 rear) at P.D.I.
Between this card and a customer asking for their spacers, perhaps the P.D.I. Techs will be more thorough when collecting the spacers? Just a thought...
I have had this occasional noise from the right rear since I bought the car (~ 1 yr). When I go over a particular type of bump, I get a sort of metallic scrunching sound. I have always wondered if one of the spring spacers was left in.
wanabe: did you ever notice any occasional odd sounds from the area where the spring spacer was left on?
Originally posted by Flyin Wedge Do you know where on the car that notice is posted when it's delivered to the dealer?
Sorry, NO I don't. Mine was left in the cabin after the P.D.I.
FWIW, this is a little card with a string loop at the top, so my guess is it's designed to be hung conspicuously somewhere (maybe on the shifter, turnsignal stalk, wiper stalk, etc.).
