i hate driving on the 101. cars cutting each other off, weaving in and out, honking, turtling along in the fast lane, sudden changes in speed, traffic at all hours in both directions... all the maladies of LA driving are magnified on that freeway.

glad you survived unscathed (except for the tires, but that's easily replaced).

I am sorry but I just don't quite understand all these posts about people only getting so little out of their tires (and I know you were probably being a bit sarcastic )

I have 10,100 miles on mine and my rear tires are still at 70% tread and my front ones maybe around 80%....I corner the heck out of my car, autox and drag once in a great while....oh, and the ocassional burn out..... ???

Actually, it is. You'd be about 25 feet behind, going 73 feet per second, which gives you less than one-third of a second to react. Your absolute minimum reaction time is probably a tenth of a second assuming you're paying total attention (e.g., like a sprinter waiting for the gun). But you're often not. You're could be thinking about other things or listening to the radio, so you have to allow yourself a cushion to come to full alertness.

On the other hand, the two-second rule is a great theory, but in practice people won't let you have it. If there's traffic, someone will always move into the space. I've found the best I can maintain is one second, and even that takes a bit of management. But 1/3 of a second is tailgating.

Wow....that's pretty nuts....

But if you did a 180, how do you NOT face traffic?
