Today I took off my stock airbox and replaced the stock paper filter with the k&n filter. Is doing this harmful to my engine? Also what would be the cons of doing so...because I havn't seen anyone do this to their car on this forum yet. Feels like it has better throttle response then normal though....
I'm not familiar with the K&N replacement for the stock filter, but lots of the guys here have replaced the entire stock airbox with cold air intakes that use alternate filters. I have over 60k miles on my car, with an AEM cold air intake, without any problems what-so-ever.
nope, it's not harmful. K&N filter is something so basic maybe that's why not a lot of people mention anything about it. no worries.
also, leave the cover off and drive a little and see if you like the sound it's ok exept the only bad (not BAD, bad) thing is you're not getting the cooler air from outside, instead you're sucking in hot air around the engine. i remember taking cover off my friend's s2k for a minute to let him hear what it's like to have an intake and he FREAKED OUT! it's ok, as long as it's just air and not water you're fine.

If you like the sound with the cover off, try a CAI.
I'd get 14.2 -14.3 in the 1/4 mile with the lid off and also using a short ram intake all the while sucking in hotter air and the exact same 1/4 mile times and trap speeds with the lid on here in hot muggy Florida. The stock airbox opening sucks in hot air above the hot radiator that is radiating hot air so regardless either way theres no significant difference except the sound from my experience.

Really? My car feels a lot faster...
You haven't been looking very hard, have you? "Drop-in" air filters of the aftermarket kind is about as common as our cars getting hit with bird shit when parked.
It would seem that any mod you spend time and money on will make the car "feel" a lot faster. In your case, maybe your old filter simply was in need of changing (too dirty) and had you been given another new paper filter while blind folded and were told it was a K&N, you probably would have had the same "feelings" afterwards.
Being able to hear the induction noise is just like installing a louder exhaust system. Whether it makes the car any faster or not, the car *feels* faster because of the extra noise. It's an illusion, but a cool one, so enjoy.
If you want to get the "sound"and still maintain the airbox lid on,just do the air box mod;ie:remove the elbow on the lid,cut off the baffle, and block the resonnator chamber.Cold air and goo sound.
If you want more, get some kind of snorkel (Muz...) or cooling plate (Garage Defend...) and a JR Filter.Voila!!! the best of both world.
