If I start from a stop sign in 1st gear, start out slowly like you would in traffic, and then start to accelerate heavily after the clutch is engaged (no dropping/popping the clutch) I should be able to take the engine to the rev limiter right? Something weird happens. At about 5000 RPM...maybe 5500 so maybe it's VTEC...the car chokes and I lose acceleration. It feels like a fall off in power. If I shift to 2nd, everything goes fine.

In fact, I can go up to about 4000 RPM, shift to 2nd gear and then red line it and everything goes fine.

Any idea what this is? Am I doing something wrong?

First things first. Make sure you have Three bars on your Temperature gauge before you redline, the car won't let you redline until you have three bars.(good safety feature) Also if there is only one bar, I think the highest you can go is 6200 or something like that. If it is not a temperature cut off thing then I have no idea.

I understand that if you are not at 3 bars (eng temp) it won't let you go to the high revs.

Excellent, thanks, that's exactly what it must be. It was my first run for the day, after the car had rested all night. Is this in the manual? I read the manual, but must have missed this. Time to read it again.

Thanks a lot!

Drive at moderate speeds until the temp gauge shows 3 bars. You won't have any more problems and will save a lot of wear on the engine. There is a second rev limiter that limlts the rpm's of a cold engine.

Thanks. This is my first high performance car so I'm still learning about it. I definitely don't want to put any wear on it. It's at around 3500 miles right now, but I've read I should wait for the first oil change at 3700? I just got the car used last Wednesday.

Uhm, why are you people trying to redline when the engine's still cold?! I'm not the most mechanically-inclined person out there, but I'm pretty sure that ain't good for the engine....

Like I said, I know very little about cars. I'm making a strong effort to learn a lot about this one. I count myself a fairly intelligent person, but with cars I'm a total newbie you know? My world is one of computer code, not engine speeds.

I'm not going to do this again, believe me. At least I learned what I was doing wrong right?

The LAST thing I would ever want to do is hurt the car. I've been spending the majority of my spare time for the past week and a half reading everything I can find on car care, driving, etc. I love this car.

Globetro make GreenMarine cry.

Hehe.
